Cai, I know of 3 in Melbourne, because I have used them to get material for my own and other peoples weddings, but they must do other material too?!
Cleggs in the city, Franke Stuart in Hawthorn and Bloom in Brunswick!
Might help???!!!
I am looking for interesting fabrics, thinking of starting to do some sewing myselfAnd I would love to know where everyone gets their fabrics!
I know Spotlight and Lincraft are the major stores, but I would love to know some names of other stores that have a larger range in Melbourne or online.
Where do you get your fabrics? Have you ever purchased fabric from an international online store?

Yeah, I wanna check out the Brunswick store too. In fact I'm sure there is a couple of others in that area. I wouldn't buy online I think, I need to feeeeel the fabric!
If you wanna go check some out, let me know.
There is a great one in bentleigh, expensive but great fabric with awsome prints......... ummmmmmm i'll try and remember the name...............
Found it! Amitie Textiles, centre rd bentleigh. Definately worth a look.
Also i have heard there is one called patchwork on glenferrie rd that is supposed to be good.
Really depends on the type of material you are after. Sometimes the funny little stores can have the best, unexpected bargains. I would only purchase online if I could get a sample card or if I know the fabric type they are selling.
Rathdown Fabrics & Remnants - Victoria St Brunswick
Vic Markets - some interesting finds there.
Sydney Rd - lots of little fabric stores
I have an easy solution.... Come to Sydney & I'll take you to Cabramatta, there are fabric stores galore & so cheap.
Definately try Rathdowne remnants in Brunswick! Awesome shop and one I can spend hours in when we are in melbourne.
I really only have sporlight and a small fabric store near me so I buy the majority of my fabrics from the US, I have never had any problems at all and the prices are sooo much cheaper that the AUST online stores. To the point that if I find a fabric in AUST online store I will search my fav US stores to find it. Shipping is quick and cheap too about $12AUD for 4-6yds fabric.
My fav stores are
The Fabric Fairy Online Shop
Fabric Hound
Fabric Tales - Japanese fabric
SewZanne's Fabrics - Your Online Fabric Solution

If you are looking for patchwork fabrics, try Gail Bs inside the Keith Fagg tile shop on Canterbury Rd, Bayswater. It has a massive selection. Patchwork fabrics can make absolutely lovely small-person clothes and they're pure cotton (in most cases, the exception are some which have metallic threads added) and usually very comfy.
If you're buying for clothes, though, it's a good idea to check what sort of patterns you might use and have some notes about how much fabric you will need. It is hideously annoying to buy fabric for X and then find out you are a bit short.
My mother's into quilting and she's picks up unusual fabrics on ebay. Although they aren't always cheap they're is normally a good range to view!
lol, it all depends on the fabrics you are looking for, but some of my friends/family just did a bit of a shopping trip in melbourne and went to the following places, all of which have great bargains!!
Rathdowne's Remnants
GJ's Fabrics (quilters heaven on the top floor too btw!)
In Sydney Rd, Brunswick:
Unique Fabrics (this was my favourite, lots of GORGEOUS fabric and lots for just a few dollars a metre! very similar in price range to the Cabramatta stores - I've been there! what fun that was!)
Hanh Fabrics
Anne's discount fabrics
basically, we caught the train to brunswick station and then walked to Rathdownes, then to GJ's then back to sydney rd and caught the train home again! was a bit of walking to Rathdownes/GJ's but wasnt too badTheres a spotlight near the Sydney Rd ones, and a Cleggs near GJs as well! Hope that helps!!
These guys have some amazing stuff
Surry Hills - Tessuti Fabrics
Other than Spotlight I have purchased fabric from an Australian online store called One Stop Fabric Shop.
I second Gail Bs...die and go to heaven in there I do!!!
