    Learning to machine quilt

Just wondering what would be a good point to learn how to machine quilt? Are there any good easy to follow patterns or books or am i better off going to a class? I like the idea of a book but not sure if that would be sufficient. Any hints and tips would be appreciated to start me off.

    Thanks everyone!

Hmm not sure. Do you have a quilting foot for your machine - I know I didnt know Id need one til I went to a quilting class.
Im going to go to a class I think, before I try it as Im still working on my quilt top and have only hand quilted (but machine pieced) in the past

I learnt a lot of basics from you tube! It's a good place to start as you can get a grasp of the basics in a more practical way than a book I think, without having to find the 'right' book IFKWIM.

So far I have only done straight line quilting, diamond and 1/4" off seam but I am keen to give other styles a go when I get my machine back (repairs ). I found the walking foot has really made a difference, it is so much easier and more professional.

Another hint, I started doing a cushion and a couple of doll quilts first to get the hang of the technique and it really helped as they were not too big to handle. The faults are less likely to be picked up by a 2 year old too!

I guess it all depends on how you like to learn, do you like to figure it out for yourself or do you like to have someone there to help and speed up the learning process. Do you have a good local place you can look up classes?

Pandora: DH is going to buy a machine for me tomorrow, its my mothers day gift and he is under instruction to make sure he comes home with a walking foot and a machine that can be used for quilting lol.

jackrose: I have had a look on you tube and it just made me so confused lol. I really have very little sewing experience so all the lingo confuses me too. I think if i just went to a class i would get too confused so maybe i should start with a book so i can learn a bit on my own. i have a shop just near me who does lessons so i might check that out when i get my machine. Also i have heard that spotlight does classes too. Not sure ow good the classes would be from there but they seem to be quite knowledgable.
