First book Love in the Time of Cholera

Week 1 (finding the book): 12th January to 19th January (dont stress if you dont have the book by them just aim to have finished it by discussion time

Weeks 2 -5 (reading the book): 20th January to 16th February - aim to have finished reading by now if you havent dont worry but parts of the book maybe given away when others are discussing

Week 6: 17th February to 23rd February - discussion time! on how we are going to pick a book?

Should we say what our normal books of choice would be? I normally read SciFi & Fantasy to relax (I know VERY geeky of me) but read anything and everything if it is recommended to me.

Alternatively we could work through a list of recomended books... I'm new to the whole things of book clubs so just let me know if I'm waffling to much

has anyone had a look at the oprahs book club she has a few amazing books on her list!!

so I have an idea let me know what you think! We all suggest ONE book we would like to read then we section all the suggestions into 5 and we have a vote on which of the 5 we should read the winner is the one we read????

AFM I guess I would rather read something that's going to stretch me a bit - I would normally go for easy stuff, something profound sounds good ALTHOUGH I don't know if I've got the concentration for it atm...we'll see I guess

I do enjoy almost anything

Another place for inspiration might be to have a look at a VCE English or Lit reading list, or even a Uni one. I read some great books at high school and uni. The Chosen by Chaim Potok make me think a lot.

(I'll flag this for the mod team to see if they'll sticky it, no promises though.

MrsS - I like your idea of how to choose the book.....now to think of my choice!! I like to be stretched as well and made to think about stuff. Books that are a little difficult or uncomfortable to read like "We need to talk about Kevin" by Lionel Shriver really appeal to me.

I guess we could develop a shortlist to work through too. Is it one book a month?

What i was planning to do for those that wont have much time or are slower readers to do it in 6 week slots. For a few reasons:
1. We dont all have the money to go buy books so might have to wait on the library to get it in
2. Gives everyone a fair chance to read the book
3. The last week gives us a week dedicated to discussing the book

So as todays book was announced today it starts as of today (we will trial the 6 week slot for a few books and see if its working for everyone its all trial and error as im new to this!)

This is too weird... my Bookclub IRL is doing Love in the time of Cholera next month. Freeaaakkkyyy...but that's my pick!

Btw, it sells for $9.95 penguin classics in most book shops.

Do we have a deadline for when we should have read it by?
