Peanutter - I'm confused. That's how the book ended. I assumed that in the movie (spoiler alert - highlight next bit) that both sisters lived. I figured Anna dying was too much for the film viewers. Like in the Horse Whisperer when Tom doesn't die at the end in the film, but it was a brilliant heart wrenching ending to the book.
