I'm so tempted to get a kindle. I think I might ask DH to get me one for my birthday. I'm currently reading Dance with Dragons, the 5th book in George RR Martins series Song of Fire & Ice. It's massive! I can't hold it one handed which means that I can't read it while BF :( So that's my main reading time so it's really slow going. I was very anti-technology but you ladies are slowing changing my mind ;)
Getting lots of ideas from this thread for what to read next.
Oh Rowellen, I love my Kindle. I wasn't really interested, but I am loving it now that I have one.
For so many reasons!
The new Kindle touch is going to be available in Aus soon - that's the one I've got, it's great. I love the no button thing.
And they are pretty cheap too.
Never thought I would, but I looove my kindle.
About to start The hungergames.
It's funny, I find most people that love their Kindle were skeptical at first. I'm finding too that it's the big readers that enjoy it the most, because as soon as you finish one book you can grab another without leaving home. My mum hated her Kobo but she's a very casual reader so access to hundreds of books at once wasn't a big thing for her.
Ash - I bought I Came To Say Goodbye because I had thought it was a true story & halfway through I had to google the characters because it seemed so real & they were talking about news footage etc but turned out it was just a really really well writtten novel. It does however have an abused baby (shaken baby syndrome) so it might not be for everyone, but it's only a part of the story.
Today I'm going to start on Kim Noble's All Of Me which is a true story about a lady with more than 20 personalities.
I was going to read the hunger games, but then I saw a preview for the movie, and it looks just like a whittled down version of Battle Royale ... tell me more about it, please?
I am reading The Descendants. Book is great. May see the movie to get a George fix :)
That's the reason I love mine. Finished a book at work last week, on my lunch break. That would previously have been cause for massive despair - desperate reading of MX on the way home and staring out the window with glazed look on my face. Or I'd succumb and buy a new book even though I've got forty thousand at home that I really should read. Then end up carting two books home with me.
Now - back to home screen, start a new book. :D Love it.
I loved it, P! It is written from the POV of a teenage girl, so it does have teen themes (crushes, teen angst, peer pressure), but it also has some very adult themes in it - the Hunger Games are basically a battle to the death for 12 teenagers, winner is last person standing (alive). There's a whole thing about challenging the authorities, as well as standing up for what you believe in, sacrifice, love, family... It packs a fair punch.
I found it gripping and well-written. But I haven't read Battle Royale so I can't compare sorry!
ETA: just wikied Battle Royale. It does sound very similar - they send the teenagers in to the Games to prevent any uprising in the people of the mythical country of Panem. Instead of detonating the collars if no one dies in 24 hours, in the Hunger Games the "Gamemakers" send surprises in to make some action - might be a creature or some sort or a meteorological condition (flood, fire, something like that) to spice things up. But it does sound kind of similar.
I'm still reading (loose term) the same thing infact I haven't even picked it up when do u all find time
I have just finished 2 books by John Grisham, The Confession and The Litigators. I have always been a fan of JG, the law and all its intricacies (sp?) just fascinates me, and he writes very compelling stories. I was in tears with both books. The Confession is about a young man about to be killed on death row within the week, when suddenly after all these years someone confesses to the crime. Very griping, and couldnt put it down. The Litigators is somewhat humerous, it is about 3 lawyers who have basically never seen the courtroom and suddenly are suing one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the USA.
Am now reading The Drop by Michael Connelly, one featuring Harry Bosch. Only a few chapters in on this one so not quite sure what's happening yet, but he is a cold case detective working one cold case, and one fresh case.
What are you reading? "Gogo Mama"
Who wrote it? Sally Sara (the ABC Journalist)
What is it about? it's a collection of stories of twelve African women - including a belly dancer, a former child soldier, a genocide survivor, a grandmother who is caring for her HIV positive grandchild after losing her daughters and one grandchild to the disease...
Are you enjoying it? Yes, I'm re-reading it. Sara writes beautifully and with compassion. The stories are fascinating and while they give a disturbing insight into the darkness of humanity, they also show the strength and faith that gets these women through. It puts my first world problems into very harsh perspective.
Ive just finished reading "The Shifter" series of books by Rachel Vincent. Its kinda focused at the teen market but its a good read but to me it was definitely more adult focused than Twilight.
The 2nd last book wasn't my favorite (I think there are six books all up) but the rest were pretty good if you want something light to read.
Manhattan - I read The Drop a couple of months ago and really enjoyed it. Its not earth shattering writing or anything, but good fast moving stories.
I'm STILL reading Shantaram. Been having lots of headaches lately which has made reading difficult. Still loving it and would love a week where I can just get stuck into it.
I could see Johnny Depp as the main character. I wonder if they're going to keep him as an Australian or if they'll "Americanise" it?
No doubt *americanise* it ... here's hoping they don't!
Have been reading about it after my last post, and seems they have been trying to get it into production since bloomin 2005!!!
*However the author's website says he expects to complete the screenplay by the end of February 2012*
I've also chucked "Bossypants" (Tina Fey's book) in my hospital bag.
Oh I love this thread! Off to make my wishlist!
I'm currently reading Jane Eyre. I downloaded the Kindle app onto my phone & tablet so I'm reading it there. It started to bore me to death because there was so. much. talking! And not even about anything interesting.
But now I'm loving it! Would like to have finished it before starting work next week because then I'll have zero time for it, but oh well. Would like to read The Hunger Games after this. Have also found many titles in this thread to add to the list :)

Oh purplepixie, I have read Gogo Mama. I was given it as a b'day present. What an eye opening, heart breaking AND heart warming book. I love Sally Sara. She is an amazing woman. You have just reminded me to check whether she has written about Afghanistan yet. She has been reporting from there for years now.
Manhattan, I love Grisham. The Confession is very sad but a great book. Won't say more in case someone wants to read it- you should! The Litigators is quite hilarious. Grisham has a great sense of humour- sometimes very subtle. The Street Lawyer is another great book of his. And Grisham now has a teen fiction series- Theodore Boon.
I finished my first Connelly book yesterday. The first book in the Harry Bosch series- The Black Echo. I loved it (you were right OceanP!). Straight after I finished it, I downloaded the next Harry Bosch on my kindle- Black Ice.
I am all set for a while. Have just loaded my Kobo with 3 new books.
Cathy Kelly has just released two new books, The House on Willow Street and Once in a Lifetime.
I also have Sophie Kinesella's new one, I've got your number.
I finished The Descendants, I loved it. Quite sad in places, got caught out again on the train with the tears
I am set for the chick lit and light reading :D
I am reading '50 shades of grey' after reading an article about how it began on an Internet forum and was uploaded in installments, to then end up topping the new York times best sellers list.
Its been describes as 'mommy porn', i'm not sure why specifically mums, but, Oh... My...! I've never read a book with my hand over my mouth the whole way through!
I didn't read *any* of the books I packed for the hospital!
shock, horror ...
and surprisingly, with a 21 month old and a 9 day old, I haven't picked any of them up since getting home ...
lately, BB, FB, emails and daily devotionals are all I seem to read ...
I've just read 2 more Connelly novels on my kindle- The Concrete Blonde & The Last Coyote.
Tonight, I started Midwives by Chris Bohjalian- a novel about a homebirth midwife, told throught the eyes of her daughter. My MW loaned it to me. Otherwise, I would have started on another Connelly novel.
Appletree- I am intrigued by 50 Shades of Grey. Off to google to find out more!
You're really reading Midwives, Ash? It is SOOOOOO good. I found it in a park a few years ago, quite fortuitous, and I loved it.
I'm reading Dead Europe by Christos Tsiolkas.
Heather!!! TWO Cathy Kelly's!??? I so need to go shopping!
I've just finished reading Memoirs of a Geisha. Haven't read it since it came out years ago and didn't remember most of it. Lovely book.
I'm trying out a kindle with the game of thrones series but having a bit of trouble getting into it - not sure if it's not finding the time to read, the fact I'm using a kindle sideways so I can get the text big enough to read comfortably, or it's the story. Might see if I can get a hard copy of the first book from the library to see if it's the kindle or the story. If its the kindle I think I'll have to try some other novels on the kindle in a different format (game of thrones are in PDF format for me)
Leckert my kindle has a text size option - what sort of kindle do you have?
Man I want all the ones Heather mentioned!
Intrigued by 50 shades of grey too!
I'm reading another Lee Child, good old Jack Reacher. Love him!
50 shades of grey is number 2 on Amazon kindle sales :o
From what I've read I'm not convinced its my type of book!!
Leckert- I don't enjoy reading PDF docs on my kindle. The text is too small and I dont like the format. My DH has a few of his Buddhist texts on my kindle in PDF. Unfortunately it isn't possible to increase the text size like you can with a kindle book. That setting isn't available when opening a PDF book. Can you download a kindle version? It will be much easier on your eyes.
Oh Jack Reacher :heartbeat: My local library is running a competition. You can win a book voucher - to enter, you nominate your fave literary character. I feel like I should nominate someone from a great work or a classic, but I just keep coming back to Jack! It feels tacky but there's something about him ;)
OceanP, have your read Second Son? The short story, where Jack is a kid?
Ash I love Reacher too. He's just, Reacher. Never tries to be anything else, never tries to apologise, just is who he is.
I think you should nominate him
I've got Second Son downloaded ready to go but I'm working up to it, reading the ones that I'd missed in the general series first.
That's a bummer about PDFs on Kindle. I adore my kindle!
My school library had bought a couple of kindles last year before I started as teacher librarian there so I haven't worked out the specs for my kindle (I've borrowed it to try and work out how it might be used in a school setting). I don't want to spend $$ on something I may only have access to for the year as that's how long my contract is for. Might have to go browse amazon to see if there's a book I'm likely to read for free or cheap so I don't feel like I'm wasting money as we can't afford to buy a personal one for me atm.
I do know that PDFs aren't easy to resize the text on the kindle without being fiddly to read which is why I'm reading it sideways.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk so sorry if I'm confusing you ;)
Audax- I finished Midwives. Wow, it ended in an unexpected way and then I couldn't sleep (I finished it at 2am). I really enjoyed the book. Have you seen the movie version? I haven't.
How are you going with Game of Thrones now Leckert?
OceanP- I really enjoyed Second Son. I was a bit hesitant to read it. Wasn't interested in reading about Jack as a child. But, wow, I was wrong! I could have read a full length version. It ended too soon for my liking.
I have started The Lincoln Lawyers, another Connelly novel.
I love Jack Reacher too but am soooooooooooo disappointed with their choice for movie casting. Couldn't have got it more wrong as far as I'm concerned.
Just started Caleb's Crossing by Geraldine Brooks. I really like her writing style - so easy to magine yourself there. Given up on Shantaram for the moment even though I'm really enjoying it. Decision makes no sense really but there you go.
Yes, yes! So true! Think of the exact opposite of Jack, and you'd think of Tom. Every novel emphasises Jack's height and strength. Jack never meets anyone taller than him! Nearly everyone is taller than Tom! ridiculous.
I loved Shantaram :) But you have to be in the right head space for particular books. At the moment, I am enjoying reading Connelly books and birth related novels. Other times I am in the head space for more intellectual stimulation, and that's when I reach for the non-fiction socio-political texts!
I read some crap Lee Child released about Jack Reacher's size being more a metaphor of his character rather than a reality of body size, that Tom Cruise oozes strength etc. Such a crock - can't believe it is anything more than a disappointing sellout to Hollywood and big dollars for movie sales. So many more guys that would be more suitable than Tom Cruise. Mickey Mouse would be an improvement . . .
I'm really enjoying Shantaram Ash - just don't get enough quiet time to sit and really enjoy it so need to give it a rest until things settle down so I can give it the attention it deserves. I love Connelly books too - good, quick reads that you don't need to pay 100% attention to but still get you in.
erm....what or who is this Jack Reacher you guys are talking bout?? :hide:
I need something new to start reading...
