    Gnocchi

    I made some gnocchi today and was wondering what sauce to put with it. Hubby is working late tonight, so I just want to make something simple that he can reheat when he gets home - plus it's 34 friggin' degrees so I don't want to be doing anything too elaborate!

    I was thinking either a butter and sage sauce or a tomato basil sauce, but they seem pretty uninspired to me. Then I was going to do a side salad with stuff from the garden.

    What do you think. Does anyone have any yummy, simple sauces for gnocchi??

    Cream, sage & pumpkin is nice. Or smoked salmon, butter, spanish onion and freshly chopped tomato... Bacon, chilli & tomato with a touch of cream...

    Depends what you like

    Thanks heaps. Forgot to mention that we are veggo, but I could definitely see your recipes being yummy!!! And I could easily adapt to capers (for that lovely salty flavour) or seaweed (for fishy tastes).

    Than you very much!!!!!

    Hubby still not home, so still have time to make up mind!!!!

    I ended up going with the sage and butter sauce. It was quick and easy and actually quite delish. But I'm feeling inspired to try some of the other things people mentioned, so I might have to make more gnocchi!! I just love pasta!!

    We're veggos of the slack variety (ovo/lacto) not vegans so I do cook with dairy and eggs as I have my own chooks.

    CREAM SAUCE

    Add a few tablespoons of Chardonnay or dry white wine, or add some Parmesan cheese to give this basic sauce a little zing.

    INGREDIENTS:

    * 2 tablespoons butter
    * 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
    * 1 cup heated milk
    * 1/3 cup heavy cream
    * salt
    * white pepper
    * freshly ground nutmeg (optional)
    * Few tablespoons dry white wine, a few teaspoons mixed fresh herbs, Parmesan cheese, etc.

    PREPARATION:
    Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add flour and stir until mixture is well blended. Gradually stir in hot milk. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until sauce begins to boil and thickens. Simmer, stirring frequently, over very low heat for 5 minutes. Stir in cream and wine, if using. Season with salt and pepper to taste and add a little nutmeg and herbs, if desired. Makes about 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 cups of medium thick sauce.
