    Savoury snacks

What do you eat when you've got a salty craving? (Short of going to the shop and buying a large packet of chips and sharing them with no one)

And what do you recomend as an easy, relatively healthy (is that even possible?!?) snack to fulfil such a craving? Preferably something not out of a packet, and either quick and easy to make on the spot (because let's face it, who wants to cook, we just want to eat!), or is pre-prepared and frozen/in the fridge for an easy defrost/nuke/toast/etc.

Popcorn! Peanut butter (or any nut butter you fancy) on celery. Handful of raw nuts... I buy pre packaged organic roasted chickpea nuts and corn chips (when I get a dehydrator I'll b able to make my own tho) I always have a container of raw choc brownies or choc bliss balls in the freezer, the nuts make them pretty salty tasting! Ummmm carrots and homemade dip

I know you don't want packaged foods but have you tried corn thins? my favourite are multigrain and the cheese ones are good too (although these have heaps of salt) they have that crunch factor, can be eaten like chips or you can put some spread or tomatoe and cuecumber (or any other topping) being made from corn I believe they are pretty good from a GI perspective and have heaps less fat then chips

Fabulous suggestions! And don't worry Ausgirl, I had just polished off a packet of dry two minute noodles with the seasoning sprinkled on them, cos we don't have any chips, when I thought I had better ask for some suggestions!

You guys even made me think, the other day I sliced up some flat bread, sprayed with some oil, and crisped them up in the oven to have with dip. Very crunchy.

Oh! Popcorn! My friend! How I have forgotten thee! Thanks Organic-girl. I ate sooo much popcorn when I was pg, just so I wouldn't snack on other naughty things! And, I found my popcorn maker for the microwave the other day, so happiness all round!

Thanks everyone. More ideas most welcome, but I think we've got lots of great ideas here already! And hey, where would the challenge be if I said it wasn't to be out of a packet?

    not salty but definately savoury

mush 1 full avacado, 1 clove of garlic (fresh crushed is best) and a good splotch of sweet chilli sauce to taste. blend well and enjoy with veg sticks, corn chips, savoys, rice crackers etc.

I keep some hard-boiled eggs in the fridge and have one of them with salt on when I get a craving. I also grab a handful of ham and cheese occasionally. Protein keeps you full and definitely helps with the savoury cravings - just keep it low-fat

I pan fry beef or lamb, and steam up some capsicum, snowpeas and broccoli and tub it up (in little tubs!) with rice and freeze them, so I can nuke them when I need a savoury snack.

And when I'm craving salty savoury, I put plenty of soy sauce on it.

Basically no fat, nice amount of protein, veg and carb.

or if I'm at home, two eggs and a tomato with some olives - the olives give it the nice saltiness

Not necessarily super healthy, but in hospital when I was hungry later at night (as dinner was 5.15pm) the midwives would bring me Sao biscuits with margarine and vegemite - I am so addicted now!!!

Olives and vegemite are the epitomy of saltiness! And I could probably eat each by the jar-full! (Having said that, a medium size jar would only last me a week, if that, while I was pg with DD. I had two jars on the go, one home, one at work, so I gues that makes two jars for the week. eek).

Another favourite is tiger toast. Toast spread with vegemite, then strips of cheese melted on top. Thanks playschool for that recipe!!

Ham, onion, spinach and cheese muffins are my weakness. I'll make them then eat the whole tin if I let myself!

Tossed salad with feta and olives and balsamic vinegar! Nom nom!

    Now I'm hungry.
