I love them when I manage to get a perfectly ripe one - which is really hard to do.
If the skin was a dark colour or it was very soft it was probably over-ripe and in this case they do taste bad.

oh I love these - I will tear one apart before I've even gotten home after buying one (or "stealing" one from a friend's tree).
I don't like them either - never could quite come at the texture, and the smell. Don't believe it's like custard OR apple.
I love them but they do have to be just right.
