Depends how bad it is and what food it is, but in general, at home, I cut off and use the good parts.
Just doing the veggies for dinner and the pumpkin had mould on the outside. So I got wondering, do people cut the mold off and use the rest or just toss it out?
It was a big piece of pumpkin, and I am not worried about a bit of mold, so cut it all off and used the good part......YOU?

Came across this info on the ABC network health site:
To eat or not to eat?
Moulds can grow in the fridge and will even survive freezing. They can also survive in salty, sugary and acidic environments.
As mould on our food is so hard to avoid, here are some general guidelines from the US Food Safety and Inspection Service on responding to the problem:
Discard all of these foods if mouldy:
Luncheon meat, bacon, and hot dogs.
Yoghurt, sour cream and soft cheese.
Soft fruits and vegetables
Bread and baked goods.
Peanut butter, nuts and legumes.
Jams and jellies - but note Hocking's advice on Australian jams.
These foods can be saved from mould:
Hard salami – scrub mould from the surface.
Hard cheese – cut off at least an inch around and below the mould. Don't let the knife touch the mould and recover the cheese with fresh wrap.
Firm fruit and veg – small mould spots can be cut off.
How interesting! Thanks for the info! FWIW I do cut the brown looking parts off cauliflower and broccoli but anything with fuzzy things on it I just throw out.. The fuzz puts me off eating it..
Depends on the variety of the food, and the severity of the mould. ATM though I'm in the habit of just throwing it straight out. I don't even want to touch it.... lol. Gross.
Depends on the veg or fruit, and the severity of the mould. I do err on the side of caution. Admittedly if mould isn't too "bad" on pumpkin, and I've got a big wedge of pumpkin left, I cut a good chunk of the mouldy bit off and use what's left.
Depends what I'm doing with it, and how much is covered. A little bit of mould on fruit/veg, I'll generally just cut off. Mould on bread - I'll pick it off if it's for me, but if it's for Professor I won't give him the slice as he has an allergy. Depending on how mouldy the bread slice is, I might not even give him any from that loaf.
Can someone edit my spelling of mould please?
