Cars and trucks are usually a safe bet, or lego - you can get some good age appropriate sets. Or dinosaurs - 4 year old boys always seem to love dinosaurs. Super heroes are another good one - superman, batman, spiderman, the hulk, ninja turtles. Another thing my DS loved was this egg thing that you put in water and after a day or so it 'hatches' an alien or baby dinosaur.
My son is 4 in August and is transformer and superheroes mad!!! Hes been out of the cars/trucks things but generic presents like playdough, drawing books, textas, etc are always a good option. Tennis balls, balls, waterpistols, chalk etc. Goodluck
Wow, thanks so much ladies You've given me some great ideas!! I was sooo stuck, lol now with those suggestions I feel like an idiot for worrying hahaha, I'm so used to buying girlie things for DD I really just have no idea what is out there for boys!!
Now all that's left to do is convince DH to come shopping with me when he finishes work hahaha, or maybe I can con him into minding DD so I can shop in peace

Edit: So, looks like my gift was a hit lol... Big W had barely any Ben 10 stuff (I was so disappointed!!) so I went with a Ninja Turtles figurine thingee... I figured I LOVED TMNT when I was a kid (mum was even telling little Z's family today at the party that I couldn't be budged from the TV during it, and I still have old episodes on VHS tapes hahaha), so I got that and then hoped 4-yo boys are into spiders, rather than scared of them, because I bought wrapping paper with cartoon-looing spiders all over it hahahaa...
Anyway we got to the party, I gave him his present, he ripped it open and ran around the room screaming, 'MUM! MUM! IT'S A RAPHAEL ONE, YAAAAAYYYYYYY!!!' and begged to be allowed to open the box and play with it then and there hahahah - he even forgot that they were in the middle of setting up his new Wii!!
So... I'm happy lol.
But thanks again so much for the tips, ladies Now I will know what kind of stuff kids that age like if/when I ever get an invite to another 4th birthday party lol
