Something similar happened to me in 2006. The moment I was sent my training roster at a new job I was starting a month later, I let both the supervisor and the HR manager know I couldn't be there on the second Thursday because I had my driving test. First week passes without a problem - except the supervisor seemed a bit of a grump. I didn't mind, because I was training at a different store than I'd be working in. I reminded her on the Wednesday that I wouldn't be in the next day. Thursday comes and goes, I pass my test, drive to work on Friday... And I was fired instantly for "not letting anyone know" I was having the day off. I tried reminding her that I'd told her at least twice, but she wouldn't have a bar of it! Swore at me, shoved me out the door, and I left in tears.

I think I did pretty well for someone who had only had her license for 18 hours, driving to (now-)DH's work shaking and crying!
