you know...I wasnt even thinking that so Im sorry if my post came across that way ...i think we spelt it more that way becuase you kn ow being german you spell things the way they sound...so to us we spelt it the way it sounded to us.

nah, i didn't think that's how you took it. but re-reading my post, it thought it could be taken that way. i do get why you spelt it the way you did and think it's a great adaption and makes sense.

by the way, i have that problem with a lot of names. i might like a name the way it is pronounced in german, but am not too sure about the english pronunciation. like the name daniel which we would pronounce dah-nee-el.

This thread caught my eye on the main page, so I snuck in for a peak and ended up reading the whole thing. lol

My DP grandmother's name is Sonia (pronounced Son-ee-a) and almost his whole family refuse to pronounce it that way (instead pronouncing it Sonya) and say she's being petty in insisting they do. I just find it plain rude. Unless the person has given you permission to pronounce or spell it differently then you should do it exactly as they say. It is THIER name for goodness sake.

Same with a friend of mine, his name is Benjamin and his whole life his mother insited that everyone call him that rather than shorten it to Ben. So now that's what he's used to, thats what he wants to be called and people just don't get it no matter how much he corrects them they STILL call him Ben.

It really irritates me and it's not even my name. I just find it soo rude.

Oh also, I dont know about at schools but in Childcare there is a law, which they are required to comply with to be accredited and therefore to function as a CCC, stating that all children are to be treated with respect and dignity regardless of race, religion, etc, I would say what this teacher is doing by ignoring yours and your childs requests to spell his name correctly is without a doubt breeching that law.

Well thats my rant anyway. lol. I don't have kids yet, but I soon will, and I can only imagine how angry I'd be in any one of your situations. Makes my blood boil just thinking about it. It's just soo disrespectful.

My maiden name was BYRD nooow i dont need to tell you how many times teachers spelt it BIRD it was annoying.

mind you it was on the daily roll call but they still got it wrong alot of the time grrr

My dad keeps spelling Jensen's name Jenson. The amount of people who spell it the wrong way just frustrates me. People even spell my own name wrong, adding an extra 'n' to it (they spell Rhiannon instead of Rhianon, despite being told countless times how to spell it).

Oh Maz I feel ya! Everyone keeps miss spelling and miss pronouncing my name. I still find it quite offensive to my heritage ('cause I'm a German Knackwauscht, too ). My name is Katharina (pronounced Ka -ta-ree-na, all a's are pronounced like the one in "car"). When I first moved to OZ, I got called sooo many different names! Kate, Cathy, Caty, Cathrine, Katrina, Karen (), Katja (again WTF?), Kath (my absolute pet hate!) and Kat. Back home my nickname is Kati (pronounced car-tee, without the r!), but no-one even TRIED to get it right. So now (much to my mum's disgrace, who absolutely loves my name) I just tell everyone to call me Kat. As in Kitty-Kat. And you now what? They STILL get it wrong and call me Kath. Grrr Ahh, I just give up.

Sorry for the rant .Just wanted to let you know I understand how frustrating it is. And by the by, Nikolaus is spelled the right way after Saint Nikolaus. We celebrate his day every December 6th, where we polish our shoes and put them outside to be fiilled during the night by Nikolaus with lovely German chocolates . There are lots of lovely songs about St Nikolaus, too! I'll sing them to you when we meet one day! Now who's going nuff nuff?

I hear you! It's so annoying! Dd is named Amelie pronounced arm-eh-lee (sort of) but we always get Amelia, are-meer-lee, am-mar-lee or my fave that mil seems to always say is Amy-lee.I get when people don't know but, when they have been told it's just plain disrespectful.

My MIL bless her is clog wog (Dutch) and she informed me that her name in Dutch is Lambertha...and when her family immigrated over her the preist told them to change their names to more 'English' themed ones...she picked Elizabeth and told everyone to call her Betsy

The ARt teacher now spell's Nikolaus' name correctly....Im having the irrates with her now just writing 'Wil' on Wilhelm's work. I dont have to worry he lets her know I so cant wait for Vyolett and Mateuaz to go now

Good on ya! Finally the teacher is learning...of sorts. SURELY if you told her off for not spelling DS1 name correctly, she would realise names are important to you and spell DS2 name correctly, too! Damn, that women is thick.
