Ok, this is actuallly made me really angry! I am still thinking about it !
Not only does it foster an attitude that smoking is okay, it also is reinforcing a social aspect of smoking, hardwiring these kids to relate break times, friends and food with smoking. This will make the habit even harder to quit, its the kind of situation the tobacco companys could only dream of having!
Enabling smoking is just as bad an encouraging smoking. Just because at 16 you can smoke, doesn't mean that they should be enabling these students to do so.
If students are smoking and going out of class to do it, then the solution should be to make these kids complete Quit programs, not legislate a way for them to smoke within the bounds of the school! When I was in highschool the deputy principle would have you in afternoon detention completing a Quit program if you were caught smoking.
I would be calling Today Tonight or 7pm Project and dobbing.... i'm sure a sour media reaction would nip the practice in the butt pretty quickly!

I don't know maybe there's more to it then what we know. Maybe it's better to have them supervised then leaving the grounds for some reasons unknown to us?

.... and i'm sure there is students sneaking off at lunchtime to have sex too, is the senior campus going to give these guys a room to stop them going off campus? I mean, if they are over 16, they are legally allowed to have sex....

The only thing I can think is that those pupils who leave the school grounds to smoke tend not to return. At my high school children were not allowed to smoke, but a blind eye was turned to smoking at the back gate because the alternative was walking further away from the school and possibly missing classes. I would expect any school that had an arrangement like this to have it off school grounds, and coupled with smoking cessation information for pupils though.

I think it's completely unacceptable. I don't buy into the whole "they would leave school grounds" thing. I'm sorry, but they are at school and should remain on school grounds. This was happening at my DS1's old school and I didn't agree with it at all. I think it's a poor society when teachers aren't allowed to discipline students under their care for fear of repercussions from parents/carers/society in general.
Besides all that, um isn't smoking supposed to be "bad for your health"????? Should we also promote safe drinking for those students who like to imbibe at lunch?
...... I'll get off my high-horse now!

That is rediculous what sort of message are they sending to the younger kids.
Staff and patients can not smoke in a hospital ground so why should teenagers be allowed to smoke at school!

Yes you are quite right, there probably are students leaving school for other legal activities. It's not compulsory to attend school after 15 or 16 anyway. No, they wouldn't give them a room for other legal activities, it would depend on what the activities are.

It is a public school and the middle year campus where my boys go to is just up the road. If a child is caught smoking in the middle years campus they get suspended. What message are they sending out to the younger children, you get suspended now but it's ok to smoke when you reach the senior campus. The school is at the end of my street, I'm thinking tomorrow to go for a walk and see if I actually can see students smoking, not a good look for the school and their care for their students. The I'm going to ring the principal and see what he's got to say about all this.
