Im only 19 years old and when i gave birth to my daughter grace 10 weeks ago (she was 10lb)i apparently slipped a disc in my back and its collapsed onto a nerve, i found that out a week ago after a month or so with physio and nothing working. My doctor said i will have to see a neurosurgeon and have surgery on it. its so painful and annoying as im a single mum too so its really hard carrying and nursing and everything and im constantly hurting. but because i havent got public health insurance i might hve to wait for ages to get the surgery ....and cuz im breastfeeding i cant take anything for it....argghh lol has anyone else got back issues i feel so helpless and i just want this fixed so i can enjoy my beautiful girl and not be in pain (
I"m so sorry to hear you are in so much pain. The only thing I can recommend is to keep going back to your GP and see if they can get your referred a bit quicker to the hospital/surgeon. I would also seek some specialist advice about your pain relief options as I do believe there are some things that could be taking - obviously not all the time but just when it's getting too hard to handle, kwim? After my c/section my wound got infected and there were several different types of pain relief offered to me at the time.
I have a not so good news story but I think its better to knwo where you are at.
DP slipped a disc in his back at the gym and went to a chiro and it made it worse. It became a petruding disc and basically incapacitated him. We didnt have PHI either and because it wasnt a 'life threatening injury' the wait list was extreme. We waited it out 6months on the public system and when 6 mths came around they said it would be at least another 3months (as all the emergency surgerys get pushed ahead and non-life threatening ones jsut keep geting pushed back).
We ended up forking out the $13 grand for the operation at a private hospital as DP couldnt live with it anymore. He became so depressed, out of work for 6months, a 'cripple' basically. He awas hunched over all the time.
After surgery he was instantly better. I hope you get better and dont end up needing surgery. As I said DP's was a petruding disc, but it did start as a slipped disc.
thanks heaps for ur advise i have an appointment with a neurosurgen friday, i hope this surgery will fix my back so i can look after my little girl properley i can hardly walk at the moment as my back is getting worse and the compression on the nerve is causing weakness in my leg constantly. im worried about the surgery and my little bub as im breast feeding im hoping i will b able to still do that im not sure how long in hosp or if she;ll be able to stay with me ..argghhh craziness
It might be a good idea to start expressing and freezing some milk so that if you have to "pump and dump" for a short time after your surgery you still have some EBM to feed her with. I can't see any reason why you shouldn't be able to keep feeding your DD while you are in hospital, make sure you tell your surgeon and the anaesthetist and everyone you come into contact with that you are breastfeeding so they can tailor the drugs they use specially around that. I also suggest you ring the ABA help line as they will have some good tips on keeping your supply up when you're recovering. Good luck! I hope it's good news on Fri as to getting in sooner.
thanks so much for the great advise, i saw the neurosurgen and he said i should wait 3 months to see if i see any improvement before going ahead with the surgery as if i have it i will have to stay in bed for 3 months for recovery which is going to b impossible if i have a 6-7 or so month older at that time. finding it all abit difficult atm just wish it would just go away n let me get on with my life...
