    Cradle Cap

DS has cradle cap (it makes his head a bit stinky is this normal?)

Any way - I read that you can rub oil on their heads and it will soften it and then it should gently rub or brush off - but what type of oil?

    Cheers

I just used cooking oil....it didn't work for us though. Moogoo scalp cream is a winner here.

i tried olive oil but it didn't work. then my mum suggested mixing bicarb and water into a paste, applying and leaving it for a few minutes and then removing (preferrably with a fine tooth comb or brush). this worked very well. after that i'd rub olive oil into his scalp once or twice a week.

I tried oils too but DD's scalp would be so oily for up to 4-5 days ... looked awful !!

So, i would once a week massage a heap of Hydraderm cream (not the lotion one) ... it's a tub can purchase in Priceline ... & then pop DD in the bath & wash off with water only. Her hair would be a bit greasy looking for about 1-2days

GP & MCHN both said it's fine to take the dry bits off manually with your clean nails/hands which i would did sometimes on inbetween days if i saw any dry scabs on her scalp.

Yeh, their scalp can smell infact i remember DP once said DD's scalp smelt like a dog (that was before the Hydraderm days, LOL )

I used the Bicarb paste (as described above by BabyMama ) for both my boys and it worked brilliantly. I did it while they were in the bath and would rinse it off just before I got them out.

But other people use olive oil and find it works well.

I second MooGoo scalp cream. It contains anti-fungal oils like lavendar which you need to have to stop it coming back. Olive oils etc will help you loosen and remove it but won't stop it returning. Go to the MooGoo website and read about what they have to say about cradle cap. Very informative.

    Thanks Guys

BabyMama and Trish - just gave him a bath and used the bicarb paste - it has really softened it - will do a few more applications over the next few days - seems to be working a treat

Bella had it really bad for a while there. I hated the thought of using any oil on her hair/head, so each time I washed her hair I would run pf those fine nit combes through her hair and amazingly it picked up the craddle cap without any fuss or pain to her. Only took a couple of weeks and it was all gone.

The bi-carb will help remove it but won't stop it from returning. Wikipaedia also has some good info on cradle cap.... about how olive oils etc also help remove it but then apparently end up feeding the micro-organisms that make it come back.
