Sleeping positions - sore hips :((

    Howdy all,

I read somewhere on here that it is best to sleep on your left side (or side) during 2nd tri onwards and as I am a back sleeper thought what the hell it won't hurt ... yeah right I have been alternating sides now for a week and my hips are sooo sore.

I have tried stuffing pillows under them, and under my belly and top leg etc but its getting to the point that I am waking through the night sore and having to switch sides which is just as painful.

My hips feel like my horse has kicked them

In the end last night I propped myself up into a semi sitting postion and slept like that just to get some sleep.

Has anyone else noticed sore hips when sleeping on their side? Any solutions for a pain free sleep???

OMG that was the worst part about pregnancy for me. My hips were killing me by the end! I didn't find a solution. Had to keep waking up and rolling over. I found the pillow between the legs helped a bit.

hun i feel your pain, the bad news is it only gets worse
maybe scoot off and see an osteo incase your pelvis/hips etc.. are slightly out thi smay give you some relief
i cant suggest much more than that!

ETA my hips are hurting at the moment, much the same as when i was pregnant

I also have sore hips ATM & find that sleeping with a body pillow gives some relief. I have one of those long narrow ones. I have it between my knees & also rest my belly on it, so I'm kinda off my hip IYKWIM.
Wrestling with a big pillow makes it harder to turn over during the night though!!

Definitely try a pillow between your knees, it helps take the pressure off.

I use a body pillow atm and it is sooooo good!

    Hope you feel some relief.

Sorry to hear you are having such a tough time, NaeNae

I also have crazy sore hips and if I am not waking up to wee, I am waking up from the pain, so I know what you are going through! Now, at 35 weeks, I get lower back pain if I lie on my back and therefore have to deal with the sore hips associated with lying on my side. I move around sooo much at night that a maternity pillow really isn't an option for me.

What helped for me was to lie on my back (and get some decent sleep) until it really became too uncomfortable (around 30 weeks). I checked with my OB and he said it was no problem and that if my body was having issues with it, it would change position or wake me up. So, if I was you, I would continue sleeping on my back and you will know when you can't anymore...then opt for the horrible "sleeping on your side" solution.

Not particularly helpful advice, I know, but perhaps it can get you a couple more weeks of decent sleep x

I used to have a long body pillow which I would wrap under the belly, and then between the legs. It helped make me comfortable, until I woke up and had to roll over. DH hated it. But I am going to get it down soon to use this time... Sleeping pregnant is not fun... xo

thanks girls I had no idea about this as this stage last year I was in hospital hanging from my ankles I was kinda hoping someone would say "don't worry you'll get so tired and exhausted that you'll just crash anyway" so much for wishful thinking

OK so I will note this down as one of my NEW pregnancy joys.

Thanks so much I will try a few more side but not so side possies and see if that makes a difference.

Jols, I hope your hip soreness is nothing serious, take care hun won't you

Oh boy ain't it fun.... I am sleeping with 3 pillows atm, makes it fun to roll over at night - which I do every hour or two...
One U shaped under my tumm & legs, another between my legs - that helps a bit with the hips.
If they get too bad during the night, I prop another pillow under my back so I can lie on a bit of an angle instead of straight up & down on my side.... I don't know if that makes sense? It's not quite completely on my side but angled towards my back just a little bit. It takes the pressure off my hips a little.

I thought I might try acupuncture as well since that was so good with my back. but my hips don't really bother me through the day, mostly at night...

Rufalina, my DH says that is the main reason he wants this bub out so soon...so he can get a good nights sleep

I occasionally have the same problems. The thing I have found that helps me is taking calcium & magnesium tablets 3 times a day with the last one taken about an hour or so before bed.
On the nights that I forget I have problems sleeping thanks to the hip pain.
I hope you get some relief real soon

    Hi Nae

Oh this one is fun, isn't it? NOT!! I've suffered from this for a few months now but mine does come and go, it's not every night.... but there is usually something else hurting instead

I use a maternity/body pillow on one side which supports my bump and also goes between my thighs. It does help but I did still experience pain. I just have to switch sidess when they ache. I try to sleep on my left as much as possible but my OB told me it was fine to sleep on my right if that was more comfortable. It's actually no more comfy than my left but it does give me some relief for a couple of hours until that side hurts so I need to flip back to my left.

Keep remembering it's all good pain. Your body is doing what it's supposed to do. Well, I'm not sure if that is 100% true but it gets me throuhg the nights

Yay! i'm not the only one!!
I spend my whole night waking up every 45 mins to an hour aaaaaallllllllll night long. It's driving me crazy. And not only do my hips kill, but when i roll over they click or feel like their rolling out of their sockets and plus cause i'm so huge atm it takes ages to roll over. (sorry, not really a reply more a vent)

I hope everyone find some relief soon!

I just had a thought that perhaps the "powers that be" are getting us ready for sleepless nights

I might steal Dh triangle pillow as well tonight and see what type of a nest I can build.

Taurs - as my old ballroom instructor (mark wilson) use to say "Pain is but a passing phase" or "its happy pain"

If it comes with the territory its all good, bad pain

Exactly - positive pain! I think that is going to be my mantra in labour 'You can can and will get though this, it's all positive pain'

Sorry to hear your having problems Nae. I'm kinda the same, though I can ONLY sleep on my left side. Sometimes I want to try sleeping on my right side or my back (which I've heard is a no-no) but I just can't help but roll straight over back onto my left side.
I hope it gets better for you

I think the only solution will be to sleep sitting but no doubt once you spend a week doing that your butt would get sore. I like the "pain is weakness leaving my body" quote too.

I sat last night with a hottie on my left hip which seems the sorest, that offered some temporary relief so there you are girls - won't help at night but it is soothing.

I have always been a tummy sleeper, and i try to sleep on my sides, but always seem to wake up on my stomach. I must move during my sleep and not know. My neck and sides have been hurting a lot, as i have tried using my leg to elivate myself so that i can still sleep on my tummy.

can sleeping on your tummy cause major problems to the baby? or is it just 'not reccommended'...cause no matter how hard i try, i always end up sleeping on my stomach
