    Question Baby weight accuracy?

I had to have a 28 week scan on Monday and all was good - baby is measuring above average now! They said it was 1.8 kg at 28 weeks. Does this mean I will have a whopper? I know there is room for error but has anyone's scan's been accurate? mackenzie was born at 40 weeks and weighed 3.775 kg.

i had a scan at 37 weeks with my son and they told me he was 7 pound 7 ounce , i had him one week later and he was 3690g which they told me was 8 pound exactly
with my daughter they told me at 36 weeks she was 2.4kg i had her at 38 weeks as well and she was 2.7 exactly, so there is i think they say 700g either side. at least ur bub is doing very well to be that big already hehehe

    Not accurate at all.

I was told DS would be a big boy and weigh in the high 8 lbs - he was 7lb 5oz - nowhere near their guess.

Don't count on it being accurate - Juliette was predicted to be 3.2kg at term & she was actually 4.5kg so they can be waaaay out (both ways).

At 36wks, I was told he would be 7lb8 and he was 7lb 9, so in my case they were spot on which was a surprise!

With DD#1 my obs felt my tummy and gave me an estimate and said that she would make it just under 4kg. She was born 3915g. So he was correct. Although he went by feel, not scan.

Regarding your scan, at 29weeks DD#1 was estimated to weigh 1.7kg so you may or you may not have a larger bub.

Jordie, I had a growth estimate scan at 28 weeks too - they said bubs was around 1.5kg, my DS was born at 36wks and weighted 1.6kg so I am happy that this one isnt going to be small.

My OB wants me to have another scan at 34 wks to see if I am having a big bubs. I am going to try for a VBAC so OB a bit worried about big bub with scar etc. My family history is for babies at least 8.5 lb - my sisters biggest was 12lb 8oz!

I am not keen on another scan as I dont think they are very accurate and I am confidant about birthing a big baby. I have heard that being 10% off either way is about normal for the scans.

Is your OB wanting another scan or are you just wondering about eventual sizes?

Don't think any more about it until the baby is on the scales. Seriously, growth scans mean very very little.

As others have said they aren't very accurate... it's just an guesstimate.

    However...
Brendan was 1109 grams at 28+1 weeks, he was born exactly 2 weeks later, 30+1, and weighed 1545grams.
Tristan was 1702grams at 28+3 weeks, he was born at 34+3 and 3090 grams.

So yes it is possible bubs will be big, but the growth could also slow towards the end of the pregnancy. There is no way to accurately tell.

Bubs is doing really well by the sound of things

    yeah not accurate at all.

Both the older boys were way off what they said, MORE than 700g off.

Ashton they said he was a nice size, but they were floored when I birthed him and he was 5kg (11lbs)

At 34 weeks I was told I'd be having a 7 to 7 1/2 pound bub at full term. I gave birth at 38/4 & he was 7 pound 13 so would've been even bigger had I got to 40 weeks. I expected a smaller bub to be honest as both my ex and I were small bubs.

My obst says that weight estimate scans can be inaccurate, more so earlier on, and that the best way to gauge it (if you've had a baby before) is to compare the size of your belly with the last time... although it's a little hard to remember specific weeks is it not?
But it makes sense... if your belly's bigger this time then chances are it's a bigger baby.
