    Talking Help me move!

Seriously, we haven't moved in 5 years and we've accumulated a lot of stuff since then (including a piano) and we're moving about 45min away...what do I need? We move in about a month...we've already packed lots of stuff we don't use.
We've got quite a few family and friends who could help move, so should we just hire a truck?

And it's a brand spanking new house that we've built, so what will I need to buy for straight away? A letterbox and...maybe at least a blind for the ensuite? Lightbulbs?

HELP! I'm very excited, but there's so much to plan and I don't want to miss anything, I'm sure a month will FLY! I can't believe they only started building in June...
I need you guys to assist my brain.

a letterbox is a good start Blinds/curtains for the rooms if they don't come included. Lightbulbs should already be included when the electrician does their bit. I would hire a truck, much more efficient to move that way.
    How exciting!

Oh that would be good about the lightbulbs Jodi! I guess we'll find that out when we do the check a few days before we move in.

I KNOW Ajp, they said December! Glad though, better than moving just before Christmas, AND it's in school holidays so we can put our family of school teachers/admin to work.

Lightbulbs should most definately be included with the sparky's work hun, and im not sure what you nutted out in your contract but a letter box should be as well ... i know it comes standard in all of our homes (i work for a construction company )

super exciting to be moving into a brand new home tho hun! I love new home smell hehe

We chose not to make progress payments and the things like letter box, toilet roll holders, etc came with making progress payments - doing the maths it worked out better this way somehow. Probably lots of other people thought so too, cos they don't offer no progress payments anymore.

Yeah it is exciting, our place is pretty small with no usable backyard and tiny laundry and no kitchen bench space, so it will be great to move into a place with space and things that work.

that works very well nelle!! im sure your mum is rapt
let me know if you need a hand packing!!

ETA id try and organise one of those companies that come in (after youve moved) and change all normal light bulbs to the energy efficient ones

Wow! Congratulations! How exciting!!! Definitely hire a truck - much easier with a hydraulic lift at the back too.
Maybe do a room by room list when you do your next inspection?
    Smoke alarms/fire blanket/extinguisher
    Kitchen bin/cutlery drawer thing
    Door mats
Get spare keys cut - give to someone responsible (we got locked out mid move )
A good help when moving is to pack a picnic basket with kettle/coffee/tea/snacks/cups and a loo roll so you have easy access to them!!!
    Ohhh sooo exciting! Enjoy.....

I would try and get a piano mover if you can. They are such delicate but heavy items. There are specialty companies that do it. The last thing that you want is to move into the new house and have to pay a fortune to get the piano repaired because a well meaning friend of DH dropped it on his foot (and think of the horror of getting the foot repared too!)

And the gentler the move is on it the cheaper it is to get it tuned afterwards.

Have you got your bins organised??
Lol, sorry. A friend of mine recently moved out of a new place. When they moved in alot of things were forgotten.
No screen door, no fly screens, no wheely bins, no TV ariel. Oh & the adress changed 3 times in the first few weeks, fun for telstra, electricity etc!

Light globes aren't always included. They weren't with our first house and either was door stops so check on that one definitely!
Are fences included with your builder? You may need to book in fencing in advance if it's not. I know there was a 10 weeks wait down here at one stage cos it's so busy!

What about fly screens? You may not need them now but it won't be long and the budgies will start coming in

Get brave and purge as you pack. I've always donated heaps every time we've moved And if you are getting stuck into it now you don't need to worry about the stuff you throw out clogging up your bin in the last week.

If you start the linen cupboard and kitchen stuff you never use and only leave out the daily essentials you will have less to pack in the days before the move.

You guys are AWESOME! Thankyou so much for your help, I think you'll be my lifeline in the next month!

    Now let's see:
    - the house comes with smoke detectors, but ooer on getting locked out Mak! I'll get some keys cut asap then! But I think it should be okay, since we're hoping to have people stationed at either house, me and dad (recovering from ankle op) at the new house, me unpacking and dad maybe installing blinds...not sure yet. What else can I set him to work on?
    - You might be right on the piano removal Muppity...I'll look into the cost with our local dealer where we got the piano.
    - Oh bins! How do I organise those?
    - We've got fly screens and fences included. And I've already done the linen cupboard - it's the only cupboard in the whole house and I got sick of having no storage! I hear you on the purging, you're right, we'll have to keep being really disciplined...helps that it's easier to chuck some things than pack.
    - As for the antenna, we've got one that dh chucked on the roof so I guess we can bring that with us? We don't watch too much tv anyway, so hopefully we'll be okay. We'll just record a lot of tv before we go? Haha.
ETA: - ooh yeah, picture hooks.

I think you'd ring the coucil about bins. They'd have to organise them wouldn't they? Even though most garbage services are done outside the council I'm still pretty sure it'd go through them. Since they pay the outside companies & its to do with your rates...
Never had to do it myself though, so
