I'm having a Mirena put in tomorrow. I suppose I'm just wondering one thing - is it especially painful to put in? I had my little boy six weeks ago and DH and I tried DTD - things were still a bit tender higher up. So, I'm worried I'm going to hit the roof if anything's being put past my cervix.
Just interested to hear what you all have to say. I'll inevitably find out tomorrow, but just looking for more information before I'm fully committed.
That's really hard to answer, as it is different for everyone. It is apparently supposed to hurt a little, the doctor advised me to take pain killers (panadol) before coming in. I forgot to take them but luckily I didn't feel any pain at all. The doc said I was the "perfect patient", LOL, as I didn't flinch at all and didn't even have any spotting.
A little pain and spotting for a few days after is very normal though. thinking back (I had mine put in a year ago) I think I did get a little period-like cramping for a couple hours afterwards, but it wasn't too bad
Take a panty liner with you in case of spotting/bleeding afterwards.
I can't imagine it would hurt anymore than the amniocentesis I had when DS2 was 18 weeks in utero. Everyone's different, there's no doubt. Just like everything. Dunno what I'm worried about, I've had two drug free labours!! Everything else should be nothing compared to that! Once a chicken, always a chicken.
they can apply some local numbing gel there if you are really concerned.
it may be tender but also it is very tiny and if the dr has good vision of the cervix it should pop straight in. :d
good luck
It does hurt - for me it was like bad period cramps - but was bearable. I don't know whether having it so soon after birth will make it better or worse - certainly you will be more sensitive, but your cervix should also open more easily. Best of luck hun.
I had my Mirena put in 10 wks post-birth. My ob used a local anaesthetic on my cervix so it wasn't painful at all, just a little uncomfortable. I had some cramping immediately afterwards, but nothing else to speak of. Other friends have spoken of not having the local and it sounded much more painful. Ask for it.
Apparently it is better if it goes in closer to the birth, can't remember why though!
Thanks for that everyone. I will request the local - he's probably already going to do it anyway. I'd say there's some instruction on doing it they follow as a matter of course.
Jennifer13 - probably something to do with the cervix not being completely closed up (like usual) or something thus making putting it in easy as pie.
Thanks for this thread Evie. I'm still getting around to making my appt because I've been too nervous, LOL!! Can't wait to hear how it goes tomorrow. Best of luck!!
I'm gonna be honest. It really hurt me. I had two drug free labours too. The pain is nothing like that, nothing could be, but it took my breath away a little bit. I had mine put in about 6 weeks post birth too. The most uncomfortable thing is having the speculum in for long enough for them to put it in. I'd recommend the anaesthetic just cos why put up with the pain? You've been there and done that! hahaha. Also, a little bit of just in case info, I'd recommend asking them to cut the string short. When I had mine put in, DH and I were DTD and he could feel the string! Sorry TMI but I had to go back so that they could shorten it. I bled for about 12 weeks after (rare but it does happen) but it was only very light, more like discharge. Since that's stopped, I get a pretty regular period but it lasts for half a day and it's like darker discharge and that's it. It's fantastic. Other than that, I don't even know it's in there. So it was worth the pain :-)
Not traumatic at all. I haven't had any cramping or anything apart from some spotting all day. So, there you go. I didn't have any anaesthetic at all, he just did it and I had a pap smear at the same time - so killed two birds with one stone.
I have a check up appt in a month, but apart from that, I'll just have to see how I go. The Dr recommended giving it a good "go" for at least 6 months. He reckons any problems (if there are any) tend to settle down by then. If there are problems still in 6 months, we can review whether it is taken out. So far so good.
So there you go. Will be interesting to see what happens in the long term.
Hi ladies, just wondering if anyone can tell me who can put the IUD in?
I didn't have an OB for my pregnancy and I want to go to my GP to get it put in, but the receptionist said that she doesn't do them, and would refer me to a specialist. I found that bizzare as the GP was the one who removed my original IUD, what's more, she's an OBGYN / GP
I don't really want to go to a stranger.. do you think there's any chance the receptionist could be wrong? Did anyone get their IUD put in by a GP?
Any GP can remove the Mirena, but I think you need an ob to have it inserted. While your GP may be an ob/gyn, if she's no longer practicing she might not do this kind of procedure. Alternatively, she may just prefer not to herself (for whatever reason). But check with her if you're unsure.
