I"m by no means an expert, but I've put on about 5 kg and I'm almost 18 weeks. I have been eating non-stop, so I thought I would have put on more. Mostly on my tummy, but a bit round my bum and thighs too. I only noticed I had put on there when I tried jeans on.

My Dr told me 8-12Kg is the average aimable weight gain if you're a healthy weight before falling pregnant. I of course, put on 19!!!! And I was not eating unhealthily - just hormones!! Everyone's different - as long as your baby is growing, your Dr isn't concerned, and you're not eating junk, don't worry about putting on too little or much. You can kick the extra weight after you've had the baby. Some women will only put weight on their tummies and boobs, and some this will all be baby, but others will pad out all over or in hormonal spots like the bum and thighs. It's very individual.

    I've gained 2.4kg and I am nearly 16 weeks.

Everyone is different and as long as you're not putting on loads then I think that you'll be fine.

A friend of mine (who gained 50kg when she was pregnant) told me that it was "perfectly normal to gain at least 30kg"!!!!! I was like um, I don't think so.
Her way of justifying her own weight gain I guess.

As long as you feel comfortable then I guess there is no right or wrong answer here.

I had actually lost a kilo when I went to my last ob appointment. He didn't seem worried and I was told that maybe I'm just eating healthy. I haven't been dieting but when I weighed myself yesterday afternoon I was down another half kilo (it's been 2 weeks since my appointment). I was carrying a bit of weight before I fell pregnant - I was 71kg now I'm 65.8kg and totally all out front with bubs. Although, I did have pretty bad morning sickness for the first 15 weeks.

They recommend that if you are overweight before you get pregnant, that you try not to gain too much. My doctors were happy enough when my morning sickness resulted in weight loss, and now I am currently 5 kilos heavier than my pre-preg weight (I lost about 6 kilos from all the vomiting ) which they're happy with too. (I was only a size 14 to start with...just that because I had some extra I could afford to lose, it didn't matter too much and bub was healthy)

That being said, I know a few girls who have done all the right things - eaten well, exercised through the pg etc etc and still gained 20+. It does depend on hormones and body type a fair bit, too.

Doctors and midwives don't seem so concerned with weight gain these days. They used to assume that if mum was gaining weight then bub was growing. Now they have ultrasounds etc to check bub and know that maternal weight gain doesn't have much to do with it.

With DD I had morning sickness during 1st tri and when she was born I weighed 3kg more than my pre preg weight. She weighed 3.5kg so I had actually lost weight. A week or so after birth when my milk was in and the fluid settled I was 6kg below my pre preg weight.

It isn't going so well this time. I've put on 4 or 5kg so far, but I didn't have morning sickness.

Last time I didn't put on any weight in the last trimester. I just couldn't fit much food in. If I ate too much I would have trouble breathing. Just not enough room in my abdomen for a baby, a big meal and my lungs!

All that being said I could stand to lose 20kg, so I'm overweight to start with.

Aside from all that info about me... It is normal for the weight to be spread out, not just on the tum. Lots of women get fat around the face. 8 to 12 kg is the average for a woman of healthy weight.

It is also perfectly acceptable to try not to gain much weight during pregnancy. Not by "dieting" as such, but see if an apple will satisfy your sweet craving before breaking out the chocolate. It can be hard for me to tell if I'm really craving something or I'm just using pregnancy as an excuse!

Don't worry too much about the weight gain, as long as you're eating well like the others have said. I retained a heap of fluid when I was preg and put on close to 30kg by the end (I started at 60kg)! But now it is pretty much all gone bar a 3 or 4 kg's which I hope will gradually disappear over the next few months.

During my 1st pregnancy with DS i didn't have any morning sickness and gained 20kg by the end, at least half of that was in the 1st Tri. Looking back i think i was so excited about being pregnant and use that as a reason to just eat everything After DS was born 10kg came off pretty easily with breastfeeding, but although I tried I couldn't budge the last 10kg.

This time round I had morning sickness until week 10. So at this stage (21weeks) I am still below what I weighed pre-preganancy, I think also running around after a 2YO i just haven't had the time for naughty snacks.

I think my OB's recommendation was up to 12kg's, but that said as long as you are healthy and bub's is healthy that's what counts.

i've also put on 7kg and am 28 weeks.... i feel HUGE. my stomach is enormous and most people think i only have a few weeks to go, when reality is i have 3 months... i am only short so i suppose the baby has nowhere to go except OUTWARDS... i was huge with my first also... i think i put on about 18kg with my first which i think is way excessive... if i could keep it to around 12kg this time i'd be happy, but in reality i'm doing nothing to watch what i eat.... i just know that the more i put on the harder i am going to have to work afterwards to get it off, its not easy, so if you can try everything in moderation.... easier said than done...
i've also just started swimming 3 times a week which hopefully might help.... i am not a swimmer at all but have managed 18 laps and am increasing it by 2 each time.... i suppose its better than nothing.

6kgs at 17 weeks I was hoping it woul dbe less, it is on my butt, my thighs, face and my tummy.. I am bigger in the tummy than i was in other pregnancies (showed much earlier) and this time I have been stressed which equals eating for me.. don't worry too much, now is'nt the time to try to not gain, there will be plenty of time later. Each pregnancy is different, in one I ate loads and did'nt put on a thing until the second trimester, then in the last trim I hardly ate anything and put on loads everytime I seen the doc... most I have put on was 20kgs and alot was fluid!!! Least I put on was 12kgs I figure at the end of this one I will have 20kgs to lose, from this baby and all the extra 1or 2 I did'nt lose from others, good thing they have body transforamtion challenges on here

My OB gave me a brochure put out by The Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists and it lists ideals of weight gain as follows, based on your BMI pre-pregnancy.

BMI 18.5 or less (Underweight): 13-18kg weight gain
    BMI 18.5-24.9 (Normal/Healthy): 11-16kg weight gain
BMI 25-29.9 (Overweight): 7-11kg weight gain
BMI 30-34.9 (Obese Class 1): 4-11kg weight gain
BMI 35.0-39.9 (Obese Class 2): 0-4kg weight gain
BMI 40 or more (Obese Class 3): 0kg Weight gain, LOSE up to 4kg

    Hope this helps
