    Nappies for Two

I'm wanting to increase my stash and have both bubs in full time MCN's. DS is part time atm (sposies for sleeping and going out) and we have about 10 one size which does us 1.5-2 days. For the new bub, I already have about 5 newborn/small sized nappies for her.

I am guessing DS will still be in nappies for a little while longer. He will be 20 months when this baby is born and I'm not ready to TT him with a newborn on the scene

How many nappies will I need for both of them full time? Is it better to go sized for the new baby or just go all one size?

And also what is the difference between a booster and an insert?

Are the different types of material (bamboo, microfibre, fleece?) more suitable for girls or boys?

    Thanks ladies

Hey hun, I haven't had 2 in nappies so I can't help you with that (DD conveniently tt herself 5 months before DS arrived - phew!), but I did find that even though DS was 4 and a bit kgs at birth, the sized nappies fitted him better when he was tiny. Took until about 6months for the OSFA to really fit him preperly.
There is some difference between a booster and an insert. An insert can generally be used on it's own whereas a booster is used to boost an insert's absorbability (if that's even a word), however the more prolific MCNs become, I've seen the words used interchangeably, so it's best to check.

As for materials being better suited to one sex - not in my expereince. I use the same boosters/inserts/nappies with DS that I had for DD.

Hi - what kind of nappies exactly do you have at the moment? fitteds with covers?

I've actually given this a bit of thought in the past, in case I had 2 in nappies (though at this rate I may not...). Anyway, for the little ones I would say sized nappies (ie, small) or flat nappies are better.

Flat nappies with a good cover are a great alternative to reduce cost and ensure good containment of newborn poo. You can get bamboo flats, which are more absorbent and can later be used folded up as pocket stuffers or boosters for your other nappies. You can also buy fabric and run up your own, which might be cheaper still.

We used some flannel flats to begin with - bought nappy flannel from spotlight - but they just weren't absorbent enough so switched to the terry cloths. They were ok, but so bulky on a little one. Our fitteds didn't really work till he was a bit older (and he was 4.3kg at birth).

I've made my own fitteds too, with cheap material from spotlight & microfibre for the absorbent bit in the middle (bought as cleaning cloths from bunnings).

I don't think there are any boy/girl differences really.

Inserts, as I understand, are for pockets, boosters are added for extra - but same thing really, both for absorbency. Fleece is good for liners or covers, not absorbent.

    hope that's helpful

    Thanks Kim

Marcellus, we have 5 Baby Beehinds bamboo with 4 pull covers, 2 Greenkids anytimes pockets, 1 bambineo, 2 peapods, 4 magicalls sized, and 1 ecobubs.

The sized ones are all small so will use them for new baby.

When you say flats do you mean the white square nappies that you fold and pin?

Yes, those are the flats I mean

With terry-types (can get terry bamboo also, not just the old-fashioned cotton terry ones) you can use snappis, rather than pins

It's also possible to just pull the cover over snuggly to hold them in without pins or snappis. The motherease rikki covers are awesome-o excellent with flats.

Personally (and I'm sure it really depends on the baby anyway), I would go with flats or sized fitteds with a good cover rather than AIO or pockets in the first 3-6 months. Probably some of the AIOs would be fine, but I like the added protection against poo leaks that the nappy/cover combination offer.

Now, are you looking for a good night nappy also....?

I have 2 in nappies. Check out the Pop In. They are gusetted (sp?) so you won't get any newborn poo spillage. They are osfm and are nice and trim on a newborn. I would buy one full nappy and an extra insert, because you can use the cover more than once. Alternatively if you have some prefolds then just use the outer shell as a cover.

This nappy also fits my chunky 23 month old ok too. They are very basic looking and the colours are not exciting but they are a fast drying work horse nappy.

i used flats and mazalicious covers for the first 6-8 weeks with DD - most other stuff was too big, even the smalls - plus the MAL covers contained any leaks from poosplosions!
most osfm nappies will be too big until your bubba is at least 5kg - even when they say they fit smaller, the fit around the legs just doesn't contain anything at all and the last thing you want is nb poop leaking everywhere lol
DD is now nearing 7kg (at a guess) and is still in all her small AIO's, but also now fits med in some nappies, and most of her osfm nappies (not her CT's though).

    Thanks girls.
I have a pile of terry flats that I've only ever used for spew cloths. Have no idea how to fold them into a nappy!

Marcellus, yep night nappies are on the list too but I have no idea where to start with those. DS is a heavy wetter overnight, his sposie is as heavy as a brick in the mornings!

So from the sounds of things, sized nappies and covers for the new baby and OSFM for DS which new baby will then grow into...any recommendations on brands?

How many in my stash should I have as a minimum?

Google the nappy lady - she has lots of great info and recommendations, including how to fold nappies. It's not hard, really

I'm not sure how many you need with two in nappies. It also depends how often you want to wash. With newborns you probably need (at least) 20 day nappies and 2 night nappies to wash every other day (assuming you can get everything dry in one day). That's why I recommend flat ones - much, much cheaper and quick drying. Unless you can find some osfm that truly work with newborn.
They need far fewer nappies as they get older though, so 20 'shared' ones would probably be enough for the 2, washing every other day.

Maz's night nappies are great. Wild Child ones are also good for heavy wetters.

I think you would probably need at least 30 nappies for 2, and I would stick to OSFM fitteds and covers as much as possible. I have just gotten DS1 out of nappies during the day so have had 2 in cloth for 7 months. I have about 10 AIOs and 10 fitteds and some covers. I have used these as our going out nappies and at home I use terry flats. Cheaper, fast drying and I can fold them to be the right size for both boys. Even if you don't want to use them all the time I would recommend having some flats for the days when your MCNs don't dry in time.

A friend of mine has got all sorts of nappies for her baby and she said none of the OSFM ones were any good until he got to about 6kg. She said that she liked the spunky butts small fitteds and prefolds when he was really little.

I have found with my boys that they need a microfibre booster on the top of their nappies to stop them leaking. It seems to absorb their wees faster than the bamboo or hemp. Otherwise there is no difference between the fabrics used with boys/ girls.

Awesome thanks marcellus, googling now Good thing this bub is a summer baby, my nappies will dry in no time (as long as summer weather is not like it has been today, rain!).

Berrme, thanks Looks like I've got a bit of nappy shopping to do woot!

Next question is PUL v Wool. Have got some PUL covers, but thinking of going wool covers because they are more breathable and absorbant...is that right? Would wool be too hot for bubs to wear in summer?

I don't have any wool covers but have lots of fleece ones. They are really good in summer as they breath and are super hard wearing so they don't wear out with crawling and bum dragging etc. Plus you can get minky and pretty patterns etc which are really cute.
My PUL covers mostly get used if we are going to be in the pram or the car for a long time as that is when you get compression leaks with fleece or wool.

I only use wool at night - knitted my own (they are wonky but work fine). Tried a fleece cover and it didn't cut it, but i'm sure there are better ones out there.
but yeah, wool probably great in summer. no good when sitting for long periods though, as berrme says.

    Have fun shopping!

I have 1 fleece cover that is just 2 layers of microfleece and it doesn't work as well as the others. It needs to be fairly heavy fleece.

To be honest Maz I don't think I have ever had a leak in my only Mazalicious cover. Maybe I should just get more of them.
