Should we say what our normal books of choice would be? I normally read SciFi & Fantasy to relax (I know VERY geeky of me) but read anything and everything if it is recommended to me.

Alternatively we could work through a list of recomended books... I'm new to the whole things of book clubs so just let me know if I'm waffling to much

Love in the Time of Cholera

"This is one of the greatest love stories I have ever read. … It is so beautifully written that it really takes you to another place in time and will make you ask yourself—how long could you, or would you, wait for love?" — Oprah

sounds good, have a google of it

AFM I guess I would rather read something that's going to stretch me a bit - I would normally go for easy stuff, something profound sounds good ALTHOUGH I don't know if I've got the concentration for it atm...we'll see I guess
    I do enjoy almost anything

Another place for inspiration might be to have a look at a VCE English or Lit reading list, or even a Uni one. I read some great books at high school and uni. The Chosen by Chaim Potok make me think a lot.

(I'll flag this for the mod team to see if they'll sticky it, no promises though. )

MrsS - I like your idea of how to choose the book.....now to think of my choice!! I like to be stretched as well and made to think about stuff. Books that are a little difficult or uncomfortable to read like "We need to talk about Kevin" by Lionel Shriver really appeal to me.

I guess we could develop a shortlist to work through too. Is it one book a month?

The Angus and Robertson online store has a Top 100...

Ok so that heaps of books to choose from ....um, I'm having a blonde moment sorry.

I just read this about :

Mao's Last Dancer by Li Cunxin

In a small, desperately poor village in north - east China, a young peasant boy sits at his rickety old school desk, interested more in the birds outside than in Chairman Mao's Red Book and the grand words it contains. But that day, some strange men come to his school - Madame Mao's cultural delegates. They are looking for young peasants to mould into faithful guards of Chairman Mao's great vision....

I think it's recently been out at the movies (not that I've been since having kids lol....I'm not sure if it will stretch ppl though.

I like the idea of shortlisting & deciding ....

How about something like "This Charming Man" by Marion Keyes?

Ishmael by Daniel Quinn = Profound enough to make you think but easy enough to read that it doesn;t require masses of energy

I would like to try some classics I haven't read yet too - some ****ens or something...

I was thinking of letting everyone pick a book but if we did it monthly (which Im thinking of) then with the approx 30 people we have thats 30 months before the 1st person gets to pick again providing no extras join in!

So decision time I will decide how to do it from the next 5 replies ( i really want this BC going im going crazy not reading lol)
So everyone picks and we shortlist from that OR everyone gets a turn to pick a book?

    Looking forward to this

Although i'm not a big sci-fi fan, the closest i've come to sci-fi is reading the Twilight series (maybe considered more fantasy) and although i enjoyed this for the most part it got a bit much for me towards the end

Not fussed about who chooses personally - I really like the idea of being exposed to different choices! Very excited here - my 2 brain cells are getting restless, lol!
