AIO for newborns? Or are fitted/prefolds better??

I have read here that AIO are great for older babies but not always recommended for newborns, especially bf babies with runny poos. (Ahh the delightful memories are all coming back ) I used disposable with DD and am just merging her onto cloth... finally (!) and have had great success with a couple (itti bitti and totsbots). I am more than happy to keep up with the AIO/2s as they have been great so far, but wonder whether they will work for newborns??

The person I bought from believed that prefolds/fitted were no good for newborns as they are prone to leak with the runny poos, is this the case?

On the other hand, I have read that AIOs can gape a bit on newborns and have the same problem...

    Can anyone clarify?

Well, i used a mixture of fitteds and AIOs. THe AIOs i had were small ittis and NB babybee hinds. THe bbh were awesome but yes, the ittis leaked sometimes cause if the leg gape. Didnt bother me though cause they always leaked on dh and never on me
The fitteds i used were buzy bee. I plan to throw in some prefolds for this one also.
Btw, i had a skinny bubba 3kg's so i would think you would have to fit in the chunkyness factor too. Also fwiw, i bought the newborn sized bbh on special for a really good price other wise i wouldnt have bothered as they arent in that tiny size for that long - which is why prefolds are great as you can use them for stuffing or boosting later.

Doesn't sound too bad really, the huggies leaked on me a few times with DD anyway!!

I didn't think about the ability to use the prefolds later as boosters... That's a good consideration!

I found BBH prefolds in small PUL covers worked well for us.
When Baden was bigger we just used the prefolds as boosters
The problem we had is most nappies had huge gaping at the legs...

the best AIOs i found for a nb were bubblebubs and widdlewuns.
basically aplix closing ones, as I alwyas had issues with getting snaps to adjust to suit DS2

that said the best nappies i used (though my babies were both over 4.5kg born) were swaddlebees nb fitted and kissaluvs fitteds.
i used bummis and sbees covers with them.

Well I had a 4kg monster and the leg gape on him was shocking!

I loved the fitteds and a Maz/bummis cover. I had spunkybutts, tots bots fitteds to start and they were awesome. The BBH fitted sucked on a newborn cos they were so huge and mine weren't new so they were that bit stiffer.

DD2 was born 54cm 4.4kgs and I started using BBH with *medium* covers (the website sent me the wrong size but I kept them because they fit anyway) and haven't had any leakage problems. At least no more so than disposable huggies.
edit: I don't even know if the nappies I'm talking about ARE AOIs cos you still need covers for them! Either way they're OSFA and they fit my newborn.
