    Ragdoll cats

Anyone have or had one of these? I'm looking into getting one soon, they look absolutely darling and sound like they have a nice temperament too.

    Re: Ragdoll cats

Apparently they're called ragdolls for their tendancy of being as laid back and floppy as a rag doll!! I've had friends with these, and they're lovely!! Great with kids, but high maintenance and long hairs are usually pretty high allergy.

Australian mists are similar temperament, short hair and meant to be low allergy (although our misty makes some ppl sneeze). Our little mist boy is the most affectionate cat I've ever cone across, and it's standard in the breed. They're a mix of burmese (temerament and colours), absynnian (smarts) and tabby (constitution/health), and just beautiful.

And if you want the complete opposite end of the scale (but still awesome with kids), I'd have to recommend the Bengal! Absolutely psychotic, excellent playmate for any busy small person, not generally phased by anything a kid will do to them, and SO full of energy! Very beautiful and great conversation piece too (I'm yet to have a visitor who doesn't claim to want to steal my cat!)

But yes, ragdolls are stunning cats and excellent for families.

Yeah the allergy issue is my only concern...DH and I have always grown up with cats and DS has been exposed to them from an early age so hopefully it won't be a problem. I do love fluffy cats they are just so sweet and from what I've read the ragdoll's fur is a little more manageable then say a Persian. I really want a chilled out cat who'll just be happy to have cuddles and sit on my lap but also run around with DS from time to time.

We had a Ragdoll for 9 months before he was put down for medical reasons... He was the best best best cat I have ever had. The fur is like a bunny so it doesn't mat like Persian fur can.. He was just the sweetest most darling sookiest adorable lovable cat I have ever come across.
But my aunt has one as well and he is a real piece of work, in no good way. So the personality thing isn't a complete given - you get the occasional oddball. I'd suggest getting a slightly older cat so you can better judge the adult personality, and I hear dogs can affect their personality quite negatively - don't know if you have any though.

I have a Ragdoll Cat..she is 12yrs old Had her from a kitten. I got her from a breeder around scoresby area I think.
Love her, she is great and this breed is long haired. The fur is like Rabbits Fur so it's supposed to be one of the most low allergenic long haired breeds for people with Cat Allergies.
My GF and other people I know have been our place who have had allergies and coped fine with her.
She is great with the kids and loves a cuddle. I brush her most days.
The one thing about the Ragdoll as they are best as indoor cats only. They are not a good breed at defending themselves so indoor is the way to go.
When I picked Anastasia from the litter the breeder also asked that she be an indoor cat only.
She does go limp, not really really floppy. She will happily sleep on her back with her feet spread and in the air. She also lays flat on the top of our couch. I can pick her up and turn her over to brush her tummy. They have a good tempererant and she coped very well when the kids came along. She is harnassed trained so I can put a harness on her and take her outside for a little bit, only in my backyard though.
Have a look at cat-world website.
I did pay $600 for her, and I would think you would have to put your name down with a breeder to get one.
She has had no medical problems and our trip to the vet is yearly for her vaccinations.
    Love them

We've just bought a little ragdoll. We pick her up this Friday. I can't wait!

The males are more sookie, females tend to be more independent. As in the female will come to you when she wants but males will want to be around you all the time, or so i'm told by our breeder. They do have a very relaxed temprement however up until 1 year old they'll still act like a kitten and be more playful than an adult.

We paid $750 for ours and that included microchipping, vax and de-sexing.

They can be hard to come across so most people put in an interest with a breeder for the next litter. I have also found females are harder to come across than males for some reason, but that could just be here.. It took me months and months to find our little girl before she was taken.

We are hoping to get a ragdoll kitten at xmas, we wanted an indoor cat and one that would tolerate kids, and the ragdolls are just beautiful. I posted asking about the ragdolls last year so maybe do a search on ragdolls on BB and it should come up, I dont know how to link to it so I cant do that for you.
