    Dealing with curls...

    Curly hair.
I always wished I had it, and I was a little sad when DS1 had my straightish hair, not DHs ringlet curls.
I never understood why people with curly hair ever wanted straight hair.
Then along came DS2. He doesnt have a lot of hair, yet, but its very curly.
Things get stuck in it and we have to wash them out, I thought he had a dreadlock the other day but I managed to wash out the paper that had become entangled without needing to cut it out.

Is there anything other than brushing I can do to stop it getting tangled up in itself?

It's probably a stupid question for an 11 month old, but Im not sure what to do.

MIL cant remember what she did with DH and BIL.

My Ds hair is VERY curly, he still doesnt have a lot, but what he does have is a bif tuft at the middle and the sides, DP says he looks like crusty the clown

I dont brush DS hair, the only time I will is after a once a week condition, I rinse his hair out every night in the bath (getting all the weetbix, yogurt etc..out) then once a week I just put a pea sized amount of conditioner in and comb through, then rinse.
I cant use shampoo on him as he just gets cradle cap, so water only, the conditioner doesnt seem to affect his scalp though.
TBH, its just too hard trying to get a comb or brush through it when wet or dry, then it frizzes, so I dont, and it looks fine.
    HTH.

ETA- had to add....DS usually ends up with dreds in the back, he tosses and turns that much at night, if/when it gets rather bad, I will do the conditioner thing that night. I will watch this thread for more ideas!!

DD1 is the same starrysky, she gets dreadies at the back form sleeping.
We use JJ detangler on her hair after every bath and brush out ALL the knots. i cant even count the amount of times ive had to cut knots out because they just wont budge!

As hard as it is we try keep the fluff out of her hair as much as possible because that seems to be the main offender.
She used to hate having her hair brushed but now she asks us to get the fluffs out!

When i straighten my hair she tells me im getting the fluffs and curls out, its very cute

Well, I come from a straight-haired family and so does my DP, so DD's curls are an endless source of frustration for me! Especially in the morning when I'm getting her ready for preschool since she is trying to grow her hair.

I use lots of water on her brush/comb. Detangler works, but no better than water (just a bit easier to use). I still use baby shampoo on her because I've found it keeps her hair softer and easier to manage.

Her curls aren't as tight as dreadies though, so might not be as hard to manage as your DS's. And DD was bald until about 18 mths when the curls started coming, so she was a bit older before we had to deal with it.

I bet he looks cute though!

I struggled for 3.5yrs with this exact problem with Ds1. He absolutely refused to cut his hair and it was very curly. In the end I got so sick of trying to get the dreds out because he put food or sticky stuff or toy parts in his hair that I got it cut a little. Then he wanted me to cut it all off because he hates washing his hair.
I found keeping a good eye on if there is anything sticky in there was a help; as was washing it every night and running a comb through it before rinsing.
My Ds3 has got even curlier hair than Ds1 and it already gets knots and its not even that long.

Atleast with boys you can cut their hair real short if it gets too much lol

(Oh, Im the one they got curly hair from. I think curly hair is a PITA unless its really long.)

DD1 has LONG hair for her age but it curls up really tightly, all i have manged lately to do is put it up which doesn't help with your DS.. not sure he would like pig tails

Could you maybe try a bandana on him, i know he's young but he might like to wear something like that, keep it all under wraps... lol

Sorry prob no help, goodluck. I found i have to brush DD1's hair a couple of times a day, especially after meals... yoghurt is the WORST in curly hair...

My DD has straight hair that curls on the bottom..apart from using conditioner after washing & combing it through I also use a detangler in the mornings to brush out the knots easier. I have also swapped her pillow case to a silk one as there appears to be less friction compared to a cotton or other type of pillow case.

You can get a leave in conditioning cream from Price Attack or Hairhouse Warehouse (I cant rember the exact brand) You just rub a pea size amount through the hair (wet or dry, dry works better though because it helps with the frizz) & comb it through & it helps avoid tangles (you'll only need to do it every 3 or 4 days, or after washing)
