Currently reading "The Optimistic Child" by Martin Seligman.
I'm always trying to get my hands on great development books - today my copy of The Alchemist arrived! Been so looking forward to reading this book, so many rave reviews about and even Will Smith said it was his favourite all time book when he was interviewed. So that's what I have right now. I also want to read my copy of The Four Agreements which sounds brilliant too. What are you reading, or planning to read next?![]()

The Life You Can Save by Peter Singer.
Just when I thought that man couldn't revolutionise my life any more...![]()
Kelly, I've got the audio version of The Four Agreements in my car stereo right now. I first read the book about 1o years ago (?) and thought I was totally across the concepts, now I'm discovering it all over again and finding I didn't understand as well as I thought I did LOL.
I've got a few other audio books and videos (louise hay, wayne dyer, neale donald walsch) waiting on my bookshelf, needing a big intake of inspiration/motivation right now, I'm getting ready to make a shift in my life. The book I'm actually reading is Peace of Mind by Ian Gawler, teaching meditation, I think this practice is going to be what glues the rest of the shift together.
I've got 3 on the go at the moment.
Personality Plus by Florence Littauer - no idea where I got this book from, it appeared when a girlfriend visited, it was probably her xh's book because he used to read books like that all the time (shame he never took any of the advicethat is one reason why he is her xh)
Your Money (starting out and starting over) by Anita Bell - my brother gave me this book to help me get my financies back on track after a few years of going backwards
The Five Love Languages - Gary Chapman - I'm trying to work out my love language so that I can better understand myself and know how to open myself up a bit more.
Other than uni texts, I bought a new book, part 2 of a series (a sequel series, actually!). Haven't started to read it yet - will do the moment I finish my exams.
The Ambassadors Mission by Australian author Trudi Canavan. Lovely lady to meet! Her books are fantasy books.
Sopdet, LOL at Personality Plus, my friend and I went thru a brief obsession with that book when we were about 19...we had ourselves and everyone in our lives mapped out by it! Enjoy![]()
I have been slowly reading Parent Effectiveness Training for the past 3 months. I found it very challenging at first and was very dubious about it but the more that I read and the more I practice the more I am liking it. It is changing me and I am surprised by that.
I am also reading Control Theory in the Practice of Reality Therapy by Naomi Glasser (daugher to Dr William Glasser of whom I am a HUGE fan!) It is about understanding that we are driven by our wants and there are parts of us that we can control (like our acting and thinking) and there are parts of us that we can't control (like our feeling and physiology) but we can use our acting and thinking to change our feelings and physiology. I could talk all day about Glasser and his ten axioms of choice therapy. He is a great man! I'll get off my soapbox now![]()
Sopdet - google a quiz on the five love languages - it is all two choice answers and helps you work out which one you are. Mine was very easy, have a primary and secondary language
Just Me - you aren't alone with the challenging things. In the class I went to, there was alot of that going on, especially at first and especially from the dads! But putting it into practice, speaks for itself
A reminder that this thread is for EMOTIONAL GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT related books![]()

Kelly - I have googled the quizzes before, depends on my mood as to what my primary and secondary languages are. My Myers Briggs results are the same too - some of them change depending on what my mood is.
I'm back reading the celestine prophecy books as well.
The financial book has helped me by making me stop and look at my money emotional growth and development.
I'm reading The Art of Love by Demartini...slowly going through all of them! I'm hoping if I can try and understand how to make a relationship grow before i'm in one then it might work out a bit better!!
Audax you are brave reading anything by Peter Singer. I am too scared to read Animal Liberation because I just know it will turn me into a vegetarian and I am not ready to give up meat yet LOL!
The PET stuff is very good, huh?
And I second googling the love languages quizzes - if only I could get DH to do it![]()
I'm reading the Gift of Betrayl - excellent.
The Alchemist is a great book - I've read many of his books he is a visionary.
Marydean I've read the Agreements as well - like you I needed to do it twice at differnet times in my life to truly "get" it thoroughly...
I love (most) of Paulo Coelho's books! I cant resist buying them as soon as they are released. I have read The Alchemist a few times now.
At the moment I am reading Committed by Elizabeth Gilbert.. and I have to say I am disappointed. I have a few *issues* with the concept of marriage and what it means to me, which is essentially what the book is about. But for me it really doesnt address much at all in an indepth way, I got much more out of her book Eat Pray Love.
"The Power of Now" and more so "A New Earth" both by Eckhart Tolle are also favourites of mine.
Next on my list is Mitch Alboms latest "Have a little faith" which is descibed as "a book about a life’s purpose; about losing belief and finding it again; about the divine spark inside us all. It is one man’s journey, but it is everyone’s story"

Kel, have you read "The Way Of The Peaceful Warrior" by Dan Millman?
It's written as a fictional story, but has the intent of a very strong emotional growth theme behind it.
I read it years ago & things happen now in my life where I think of this book & can relate things.
It definately stays with you. The author is very inspiring as well.
Well worth the read as you can make of it what you see personally, which may be a completely different message to the next person that reads it & gets something out of it![]()
