We have just spent months (much longer than we would have liked) agonising over this decision. For reasons I won't go into, either set of our parents or any of our siblings are unsuitable at this point in their lives. The sibling situations might change, we have acknowledged that. Our small circle of friends were seriously considered, but we ended up going with DH's Uncle and Aunt. They are in their early 40's, truly wonderful people and the only family we feel 150% comfortable raising DD in our absence. It will go down like a lead balloon with certain family if they find out, but it's our choice not theirs.
Have you thought about other family members? Not just immediate family? And as for your friends without kids, if you feel they are suitable to act as guardians, why not talk to them about it? Just because they don't have children doesn't make them the wrong choice. And yep you really do need to talk to whoever you choose first, it's not an easy conversation, but once it's done you'll feel so much better about it. We sure did.
