The only time we've done it is the occasions we go to a very pet friendly place where the camp sites are completely enclosed (near Yarram in Vic). I have a beagle and a ****er spaniel. The ****er is gorgeous, she will sit by my side all day every day. The beagle is a little more difficult. She's a good dog and all, but very strong. The things you put in the ground to tether the dog, she'll pull it out no worries.
We love taking them with us, but we're looking for somewhere different to go. Is there anywhere you recommend that is fenced or any tips you can give me for camping with them?
The place we go is the Best Friend camping ground and it's the only one I've seen with individual fenced yards. We've gone to a few other places, there's a lovely one in Halls' Gap (Grampians holiday park) which allow dogs - what we do is have a collapsable dog crate and leave our dogs in that overnight etc, and on lead (not a collar, but harness) attached to a nearby tree or our car while we're there. It does pay to check out day accommodation for the dogs while you visit national parks etc. We actually have 2 crates if you want to borrow one and try it out?
Kazbah - the best friend one is where we go, great isn't it?! I honestly don't know how she'd go in a crate. If she has the will, she finds a way - she broke through my friend's crimsafe-style security door because she thought I'd gone outside, ripping the mesh away from the aluminium frame, so I don't know that she'd be secure in a crate But thanks for the offer! We might have to restrict our camping to best friend if the dogs are coming with us, and venture to new ones when they can go into the kennels.
We found when we needed the dogs 'locked up' we ran a re strong metal cable between 2 trees and then let their leads run on it so they could still move around but couldn't get off IYKWIM ???
We take our dog camping all the time. We usually just tie her to the car but she's crazy tied up so we often let her off the lead, which is totally against the rules where we camp. Lucky I know the ranger
We have a beagle too, so I know what you mean about being strong. We do what ZF suggested, and have a runner strung between the trees so he has a fair bit of movement. We also take him with us when we go swimming in the river, climbing the mountain etc, so he doesn't bark at the cattle at night
Mostly he sleeps in the back of the jeep at night, so he doesn't annoy other campers and for his own protection too. He has an iron bladder, and doesn't seem to need any toilet trips during the night.
He does, however, jump over the back seat and make himself completely at home... you know how they like to lie on their backs and stick their little stocky legs in the air?
LOL Mistyfying, I can just see two beagles lying side by side with their feet up in the air.
Tinks - maybe I should get to know your ranger too :P
Sleeping isn't an issue. She loves her sleep at night, and will sleep wherever we put her. We have an annex on the camper that can be closed, so they'll sleep in there.
