Mmm I did nursing at ACU and I only got a few books. Depends what subjects it is unfortunately.
Oooh your going to have fun walking from the main building to the lecture theatre :P
Well, now that I have recovered from the sheer shock that was $525 spent on books today and I havent even got all of my prescribed texts yet... (and I still have to buy skills pack and uniform *sigh*)
I bought everything new because I like to keep things and it gives me some self-pride, I know it sounds stupid but it's good for me
In YOUR degree (mine is MID @ ACU if anyone has any specific advice) did you end up with new texts each semester, year or did some of your first prescribed texts last the length of your degree?
I have three must-have texts for one subject alone!
One of the others is a three pack worth about $250 and have been told it will only be used the one semester
Maybe I am naive but I guess my question is that is it standard to get new texts every semester?!
In my Arts degree (not that I attended) I'm sure i only spent $200 in entire first year

Which biol ones do you need? I cant remember if Knox is the one down the road or the one across the road near the car park lol
When I studied BioMed, I boguht new textbooks every semester.
Nk no wait let me rephrase that. We had different texts prescribed for different subjects. After the first semester I bought second hand and older editions. Where I could, most of those texts became obsolete if they had newer editions, the way things move so quick in science.
For my education degree I am buying new because they aren't as expensive and they will hopefully last me.
I'm up for about $280 for my texts this semester, I like to buy the books new if I know I'll keep them for future reference. Otherwise I just photocopy the pages I need from the library.
buying new text books every semester here also!
i wonder if you are asked to get the same books as i had too?
If so i can suggest to you which ones were good and which ones not so good!
I have a few books still
Navigating the maze of Nursing research 2E I am happy to get rid of *shudders*
I imagine they would be fairly similar if not the same!
This year so far is
Stables & Rankin Physiology in Childbearing
Fraser & Cooper Myles textbook for Midwives
Martini & Nath Fundamentals of Anatomy & Physiology
Barkway Psychology for Health Professionals
Liamputtong Research Methods in Health: Foundations for Evidence Based Practice
Kosier & Erbs Fundamentals in Nursing
& one other Mid one that I cant remember because I cant find the list!
I also bought the little Mid Essentials one (spiral A6?? notepad thing)
Fortunately I think I only have major nursing subjects this year so hopefully wont need anymore, but i will keep it in mind
Sam and Indadhanu: I am glad education texts aren't as costly as health!!
Im pretty sure its a second semester one, I think middies were in with us
awesome *rolls eyes*
thanks xx
Yep i have all of them! except you have Myles i got Mayes!
Stables & Rankin Physiology in Childbearing - Good book used it a fair bit
Martini & Nath Fundamentals of Anatomy & Physiology - Fantastic book - used it all year (don't need it anymore tho) did you get the set with the CD? its pretty good!
Barkway Psychology for Health Professionals - Boooooooring - Hardly used it
Liamputtong Research Methods in Health: Foundations for Evidence Based Practice - once again boring and hardly used
I find it hard to read books if they are boring and these too were (i thought so anyway) so i didn't read them and still some how managed a Distinction on both subjects!
Kosier & Erbs Fundamentals in Nursing- not a bad book - good for getting your reference list up in assignments
I also have Skills for Midwifery Practice and i love it!
"I also bought the little Mid Essentials one (spiral A6?? notepad thing)" - very good and handy to have!
Word of advice (have done Bachelor nursing, post Grad dip Midwifery and now doing Post grad Dip in community, child and family health sciences.)
I nursing I bought new books every semester in mid I only bought 3 books for whole course but it was a grad dip. grad Dip in community, child and family health sciences allready bought 2 and will prob buy a few more)
Buy online not from uni book shops!!! Book depositry and Amazon will save you a packet (example 1 book i need is $66 at uni book shop, $29 on amazon and $32 on book depositry! (book depositry has free world wide postage where as amazon you pay)
I ordered 2 books for $12 less than 1 at uni!!!
Look at books first in book shop and see if you think it would be a book you would use much, if you wont (and lots you wont) borrow from library, lots of books the libraries have online for you to access.

I have used textbook exchange for nearly all of my books. Only have 1 left to source. They have been in really good condition too and most at around half price. I did go into the uni book shop to check what editions they were and any packs what the individual books were and I have saved a packet. I bought 1 pack of 3 book new from the book shop but everything else I sourced else where. I am sure I will have a few more books to buy for 2nd semester but agagin I will source them else where if I can![]()
I buy the essentials, ie: meaning I ask the kids that are a year ahead what's good and just buy those that I will need. I mostly Just read lectures and look online.
I brought one for last year and opened it once...
Love MN ;-)
lol I did nursing in 1996 and I used most of those books!
