    Infected sore, help.

My DD has never had nappy rash until we moved here a year ago, anyway since about November she keeps getting reoccuring spots, meaning not a rash but one or two spots in her nappy area that are very hard to get rid of, I think that they have now become immune to every rash cream sold out our chemist. We have been to 3 different doctors all who say it is just nappy rash just put cream on it. The last doctor prescribed AB's to try to help but DD has never had medication orally so not alot made it down and so it never completely cleared. This morning I woke to a runny poo in her nappy and upon cleaning the spot has a little bit of green puss, I cannot get into see a doctor anywhere (we live in a rural area and it is the weekend, a long weekend helps even less) so... has anyone got a miracle cure that they can suggest to help keep this under control at least until I can get in to see the doctor during the week?

It sounds like a fungal infection (not uncommon in the nappy region and I'm surprised the GP's haven't suggested it!). Fungal infections appear 'spotty' and are immune to basic barrier creams - sound familiar?! You need an anti-fungal for it. I remember using Daktozin on my DS and your pharmacist will be able to advise you which is the best one these days. You also need to check with the pharmacist whether it's ok to use the anti-fungal on an open and pussy sore (I assume it is open and weeping?). How big is the pussy spot? A pinhead, a five cent piece...? If your DD develops a temperature or becomes lethargic and unwell you need to insist on seeing a doctor immediately or head for your nearest hospital as the infection may have spread to her blood stream. Are you sure the doctor's in town won't see you if you explain the situation? Most will make time for children. If not, speak to a pharmacist and ask about an anti-fungal.

As for miracle cure... I have heard numerous times that honey is a miracle cure for infection (applied, not eaten!) but I don't know enough about it to recommend it!

What about bathing it in some warm salted water?

Also, as far as creams go my mum (6 kids) always swore by Benpathen. It is available at supermarkets I think. I used it and I thought it was good.

Also, is your little one getting enough water? Sometimes it helps....

    good luck x

Thankyou for your replies. There are no doctor surgeries open on weekends and there is no doctor working at the local hospital so I would have to travel an hour to the next hospital where a doctor is working this afternoon and wait in emergency.

I have tried Daktozin and Benpathen, they both seemed to work at first but didn't finish the job. I have also tried hydrozole, pawpaw, bedadine, and even a cortisone cream which cleared up her last spot but is doing nothing to this one.

I called the local hospital and spoke with the nurse she has advised to use zinc & caster oil and if she gets a temperature take her to the other hospital otherwise if it doesn't improve by the time the doctors re-open to book her in.

She has not had a temperature as yet and it doesn't seem to be concerning her it is just the damn thing will not clear up!

I have also ordered some medical honey but it hasn't been delivered yet

The main nappy cream when I had my girls in nappies was zinc & castor oil which you can buy at the supermarket or chemist. I found it really worked and they hardly had a rash apaart from teething time.

My MIL said she had used egg white. I think she beat it a bit then placed it on the bottom. Another thought is to make a paste using bicarb.

If it is sunny give her nappy free time in the sun to help dry it up.

When you change her nappy wash with either salt water or betadine and keep this up for the next week so it really heals.

    Thankyou again for your comments.

She is currenlty having nappy free time and the chemist is getting in zinc & castor oil cream which will arrive by midday.

It just seems that it is almost cleared and then it flares up again. that the Z&CO works, it seems like the only thing I haven't tried!
