    Thomas toy set compatibility

Hi all, I hope I can post this in here. I couldn't find any forum about toys... so...

I was wondering if anyone knows if the Thomas wooden railway sets are compatible at all with the Thomas "take along" and "take n play" sets? DS has a love of the little Thomas trains and I'd like to get him some for his birthday, but I know some people have bought him "take along" toys, but my Mum has bought him something from the wooden railway range. Now I'm not sure which one to invest in, lol.

No they aren't really compatible although in saying that ds's take and play train sort of fits on his wooden rails although the die cast train is a little bit too narrow but it doesnt bother him. The cheaper wooden train tracks are compatible with the Thomas wooden train tracks though. We have a cheap set from baby bunting (saw a similar one in kmart) and the imaginarium one fits too. Hope that all makes sense!

Thanks so much girls! I think I might stick with the wooden sets. There's something about wooden toys that I just really like I looked up the set that my mum bought and apparently it's compatible with the usual wooden set you see in stores, it's just a cheaper version and it comes with a bigger and chunkier Thomas and Percy.

be careful too, there are two different wooden railway ones... one set has bigger wheels and the other doesn't. They fit on the track still but they don't go under the tannels which I find annoying... I mean... Jackson finds it annoying.

Who do we buy these toys for?

The "first wooden railway" Thomas set is the big one. But be careful - if you buy the really cheap stuff, only tiny engines fit under the bridges anyway. The unbranded stuff is usually OK with the Thomas wooden stuff.

But DS plays with the metal take-along trains on the wooden railway and doesn't care that the rails are too wide for the trains. Just me that doesn't like it.

I love the thomas train sets... they're just such a timeless toy.

The die-cast take-along ones are the ones with "smart magnets" in and are a smaller gauge - they don't have batteries.

DS has a battery operated set at my parents' house that fits on his wooden stuff OK.
