Does anyone put their baby to sleep on their tummy?

DS is 9 weeks old and has always slept on as back as per SIDS recommendations. This morning I have left him asleep on my bed after feeding him so he was kind of on his side. I've been checking on him and he's rolled onto his tummy and he seems to be sleeping a lot longer than usual! During the day he usually falls asleep feeding or in the sling and if I put him down he normally wakes within about 10 minutes so I was thinking maybe I should try him on his tummy, or is it really far to dangerous??

I always put Phoebe to sleep on her tummy! It took me a couple of weeks to figure it out but in the end figured out that she just wouldn't sleep on her back. I ended up buying an Angelcare Sound and Movement monitor to reassure myself but she was fine and had great head control early on too.
If you are worried you could start by only putting him on his tummy during the day while you are awake to check on him.

I didnt put DD on her tummy, but once she could roll, thats just what she did herself and she slept much better that way. I still lay her down on her back, but she will always roll onto her tummy to go to sleep. DH was really worried when he first saw her do it and tried to get me to keep putting her back on her back, but i figured if she could get herself there, she could get herself out of trouble. She always turns her head to the side too, so i was never worried.

I think seeing as babies are little people, they have their own idea about what is comfy and how they like to have things!! If belly is working go with it, but for a young bub if your concerned maybe look into a sensor monitor to be extra careful!

    Thanks ladies
I think it's worth giving a go during the day when I can check on him like you said. He has great head control and DD also started sleeping on her tum once she could roll. I'm a tummy sleeper too and couldn't imagine being forced to sleep on my back!
Thanks again, it's just nice to hear other people do the 'wrong' things too with all the rules they give you these days.

Good question, my little one sleeps so well on my chest (yes I know he can hear my heart & smell me) but I also wondered at what age others let there young sleep on their tummies

DD1 was a tummy sleeper from birth. Still is.
DD2, not so much, but she rolls herself there now anyway.

I would let DS sleep on his belly from birth for his day naps when I could keep an eye on him. Otherwise he just wouldn't sleep! I'd persist at night tho until he hit about 4 months and completely refused to sleep on his back. He has been on his belly ever since. Even if I put him down on his back he'll half wake up and give me the rudest look ever and flip himself. They know what they want!

The only way DS will sleep is on his tummy, even now i put him in his sleeping bag and lay him on his back and he rolls over to his tummy within seconds and sleeps ALL night

We had such issues with sleep with our DD so one day after rubbing her belly for what felt like forever I rolled her on her tummy on the couch and she slept for 5 hours straight. Longest since she was born and she was 5 weeks old. We never looked back after that.. I was very nervous at night time but we had an angelcare monitor. while it is not SIDS recommended it still gave us peace of mind. DD still never slept great but I think that was just her but during the day when she was on her tummy she would sleep so much more soundly and sometimes I had to wake her to feed her cus I was getting sore. Night times well she had her day and night mixed for a long time..

Maybe if you want your DS to sleep more soundly and for your peace of mind just put him on his tummy during the day when you are awake and can keep an eye on him?

DS has slept on his side since he was 4 days old. We would roll up a little towel and tuck it behind him and one in front of him so that he couldn't roll onto his belly.

everyone finds different positions comfortable. but like some PPs said, invest in an angelcare monitor (they are worth every cent),so if he does roll over, at least you have peace of mind.
personally, while he is still so teeny, i wouldnt put him down on his tummy, and i would put him back on his back if i saw he had rolled on to his tummy. i guess im just paranoid. have you tried wrapping him to prevent him from rolling over?

All my kids started out sleeping on their sides, with something to stop them rolling onto their bellies, ie, rolled up blanket etc.
My older girls were fine on their sides, but DS & DD3 are tummy sleepers. DS from 4 or 5 months, when he started rolling himself that way & DD3 days from early on since she was refluxy, & nights for a little while now (can't remember exactly).

My sister was born with severe asthma/allergy problems & could not sleep on her back. She was safer on her belly.
A friend almost lost her DD1 when she brought up some gunk on the morning she was born & choked on it, turning blue...
I know the SIDs guidelines in & out, but I don't feel right knowing my bub could choke on vomit. They were always side sleepers as newby's for that reason...

Thanks for all your replies and advice ladies Although after all this it turns out it was just a one off and he doesn't like sleeping in his tummy after all! I tried putting him down a couple of times and he just fussed and struggles so back it is
