    Canned Tomatoes

We're pretty new to the whole BLS. DS has tried a few vegetables and fruits so far and is enjoying the experience.

I'd like to soon start giving him the same meals we are eating, rather than just the vegetables from it.

Leaving out the salt is the part I'm struggling with. I'm quite ok not adding salt, but how do you get around the salt found in things like canned tomatoes, which I like to add to spaghetti bolognese. Do you just not used tinned foods? Do you figure that a little salt won't matter? Is it more ok after a certain age?

I've found that canned tomatoes actually don't have that much salt in them. (depends what you buy I guess) My BLS book says that babies up to 12 months should have no more than 1g of salt ( 0.4g of sodium) every day. That's actually quite a bit once you start looking at food labels. I give DD what we eat and I just cook with salt reduced stock and tins where I can. The rest of the time I figure she's having so little of it that the salt shouldn't be a prob. I also try to make sure that if she has something salty (spag bol etc) one day that I will try to make sure she has no salt the next. Kinda even it out if you know what I mean. I have no idea if I'm doing it right but it seems to be working for us.

Very sensible advice It's possible that I'm overthinking it all!

When he is able to eat the same meals as you, you needn't worry about how much salt he takes as long as your food doesn't contain excessive salt. Enjoy your spaghetti bolognese with your son and have no regrets about it

Tonight was spag bol night. DS loved it! Hands first, then the mince on a spoon which I loaded and he transfered to his mouth as quickly as he could. Very messy, but loads of fun for us all.

People are supposed to consume salt. There is a difference between SODIUM and TABLE SALT. Both are necessary.

Provided you aren't adding excessive salt to your meals, and aren't offering him highly processed foods, he can eat anything you do.

There is NO NEED at all to remove all the salt from his diet, in fact, it will do more harm.

I never really worried about the salt thing and I do BLS too. I don't add extra salt and we generally use salt reduced things like stock powder etc etc anyway.

You could just make pureed tomatoes by blanching them, removing skins and blitzing them then freezing them. Canned tomatoes contain BPA.

We just feed our lump anything we're having, although he has a major preference for meat and orange vegetables. We don't push the issue, he eats what he likes and can actually eat with only 5 teeth. Apparently orange fruits are pretty good too.

He got really excited the other day when we made roast pumpkin in our new house with a lovely clean oven door at baby level that you can see through. Was like watching the best TV show ever about his favourite food!
