Wheat and Dairy Free diet and not allowed soy either, anyone else??

Hi I have just been diagnosed with underactive thyroid and I have to avoid soy products.

I have also just found out that I have a wheat and dairy intolerance. The wheat side of things is pretty straightforward to me but the dairy stuff is all new.

Does anyone have any ideas or tips for me. What does goats milk and cheese taste like?

I am sad because I like to treat myself with a cappacino when I go out but now I cant even do that because I cant have soy milk either. I am wondering if one cappacino a week with normal milk is going to make a difference or am I kidding myself and should I just suck it up.

Coffee tastes so much better without milk, so try that. (Or express your own for one coffee a week.)

Liebling has goat milk and loves it, thinks it tastes the best. When I'm pregnant and Stormy's feeding then I'll be on goat too (I had cow intolerances as a child too) and I have no problem with it. I find I don't notice the "goaty" taste at all in things like white sauces and cheese sauces when I cook with it, but too much uncooked stuff then I do notice a slight aftertaste: nothing while I'm drinking, just a brief kick when I've finished.

Start with mild goat cheese though, or sheep cheese. There can be a very strong aftertaste with the stronger stuff that some people don't like.

I am on an elimination diet at the moment (just wheat so far, but gluten and dairy to follow soon). DS was on goats milk for a while and after I tasted it, I knew I could never drink it. I am OK with goat's cheese, but as a milk, I just can't do it. If it is only wheat (and not gluten) that you are avoiding, you could try oat milk, which I find quite pleasant (better than rice milk, anyway). You can also try almond milk, which is great to bake with too. You can buy almond milk at the shops, but it is sweetened with rice syrup. If you have a food processor you can make you own almond milk with almonds and water (heaps of recipes online for this). It is healthy too - a great source of protein and you can adjust how creamy /strong you want to make it.

That's exactly the diet DS is on. Rice milk, nuttlex, corn thins, eggs, lots and lots of chips (hot and cold) - dietitian sanctioned because he needs the fat.

GF pasta you barely notice the difference. Rice noodles and rice paper rolls = yum. Out = sushi (no soy sauce). Creaminess in things = coconut milk/cream, mayo. Aktavite is dairy free (have with rice milk). Cooking with rice milk and nuttlex you barely notice the difference. GF flour can make things a bit interesting - white wings is the yummiest brand.

HTH ask any more questions you want! xoxo

PS Some dark choc would be ok for you (but check for soy lecithin).

PPS As much as it's a pain, it's actually a really healthy way of eating.

PPPS I think goat's milk etc tastes like goat! But lots of people really like them. Wasn't an option for DS anyway

We dont tend to have to much trouble in our extended family (we range from can't eat dairy or wheat to can't eat wheat, dairy, eggs, soy and any form of seed or nut, even lamb cos of whatever grain they get fed) we tend to eat lots of beans, veggies, meat. Whole unprocessed food. If you need help i have found my naturopath the most useful for ideas of alternative foods (better than the dietitian I saw!)
Wow this has ended up being a massive post, hope is not too rambling!

    Hey!

I'm dairy, gluten and soy free have been for 2yrs! I have a blog you can find on blog spot I'm healthie mummie I also have a FB page. It only has 2 recipes on there at the moment tho. The chocolate I get, and chocolate is a NECESSITY is the Plamil brand it's organic and uses sunflower lecithin. Also all raw chocolates are dairy/soy free. It's hard to find bread that is all of that free so I make my own. The cookbook by Lola Workman her site is wheatfreeworld (google will find it for you) helped me start my journey and I use it like a bible!!! Get into your green smoothies love, youl need the energy! Almond milk is a great substitute, you just need a processor and muslin wrap. I burnt out 2 food processors making it everyday sometimes twice depending on if I wanted a treat like rice pudding and now am a proud Thermomix owner! Coconut cream works great as a sub in most sweet dishes like choccy mousse... You can buy a coconut yoghurt but they don't import it to SA it's made in QLD so I can't get it. You can make a coconut Keifer if your wanting a probiotic or just take dairy free capsules. If your wanting a cringing substitute for crumbed chicken use ground almonds... Ummmm let me know if you need anything else?! :-D

Oh yes it is FOR SURE! I went from a size 12 (naturally after baby) to a size 6 as I'm really short and was a good weight for my height and easily maintained in no time! Mayb 3mths?! Wheat can cause loads of people weight issues!

I know in regards to the cappacino thing, my sister just takes her rice milk (long life) to the coffee shop and asks them to make her one using that, they are always happy to oblige it can be a bit of a pain but she finds at least she can still enjoy a cap.

Good luck with it all the others have given some great advice already. I have to be on a Gluten free diet and can only tolerate small amounts of dairy.. lots of fresh vegies fruit etc and there are lots of thigs out there to cater foe once you start looking, can get expensive though.
