    Was this head lice??!!

We got back from camping yesterday and after her bath I was drying DD's hair and there were little bugs on her scalp crawling around. GROSS! First time we have had them here, and a lot of articles and thread mention the eggs which I am not sure I could even see and not sure what we are looking for but we could see the lice not the eggs so now Im not sure.

We did a KP treatment last night and then conditioner combed through. I know it's only the beginning and we have been pretty lucky so far because they have been in creche and kinder etc. and not had any! I would prefer to use less chemicals but I don't want to to be constantly battling them so would rather just find something that works.

    TIA!

Coat her hair in cheap conditioner, and the comb through individual sections using a nit comb, wiping the comb after each section.
Tea tree or vinegar also work well.

It is hard to see the eggs without using a nit comb. Just remember to treat again in a week, and use the nit comb daily for the week to get rid of any missed eggs.

I agree, they are so gross, and make me feel Ill thinking about it. My kids managed to give them to me too, so you might want to run the comb through the rest of the family just to check.

Thanks ladies - so this was lice? It's not just the eggs but the bugs you see??? So confused because everything I read talks about the eggs not the bugs!!! My head is so itchy sine then and D and I checked each other and DS and we all seem ok but I might do a conditioner through mine today -uuugggh.

Yep, definitely lice. You can see the little blighters crawling around more easily than you can see the eggs sometimes depending on the colour of the hair - eggs are hard to find on DD's hair without actually combing through with conditioner or something.

Check/treat the whole family, then run pillowcases and hats in particular through a hot wash with a bit of eucalyptus oil and stick in the dryer on the hottest cycle you have. Or line dry but leave out there an extra few days. Repeat in a week.

I feel your pain. We've just finished treating ourselves after DD shared the last lot

Oh yes Tan you most certainly see the lice - the longer they have been left to fester, the bigger they are. Argh my head is itchy now!!!

The cheap conditioner works just as well as any chemical based treatment, plus costs a whole lot less. Remember to wash all her bedding, brushes and hats now and when you treat again in a weeks time. Putting a spray leave in conditioner in her hair daily can help prevent them too

I use tea tree oil in the girls spray bottle when i brush their hair aswell to help prevent nits, they are attracted to CLEAN hair, they can't cling to oily hair so the tea tree really works and smeels nice
My aunty used to also do a vinegar wash of her girls hair once every month or so

Thanks ladies! The lady at the chemist said not to go too crazy with washing because they don't live for long off the head, but I will do all the sheets/hats etc of course! I use Eucalytpus washing powder anyway. My head is SO itchy - I am a teacher so we deal with it all the time but it's different when you see them on your kids head

I keep brushes in watered down metho, spray my girls with a tea tree, lavender & water mix, & comb every day.
I get an egg comb (metal with prongs touching eachother, $8-$12) & comb with that when I wash their hair. 2-3 times a week.
My girls are in primary school, but you're best bet is to be onto it now. If you just run the comb through every day when doing her hair, you'll know if they come back & can deal with them before they get bad.

Dd1 had them and gave them to me, I couldn't see the eggs in her hair as tgey were the same colour as her hair and the comb wouldn't get them off I had to use my finger and thumb, tedious but it worked along with a natural solution from the chemist.

I couldn't see any eggs in her hair or in the conditioner ( I used ALOT of conditioner ) What do they actually look like? Kids are at mums tonight and I told her to condition a lot again tonight and to brush her hair through with a fine toothed comb.

Eggs are black or white I think. Black are live ones, white are dead ones.
The reason I use the egg comb is coz they are so hard to get out. If the hair is wet though, they slide off alot easier.

If it comes back, it's probably worth mentioning it to your creche/kinder. When I was in primary school I kept getting nits ALL THE TIME!! And I had long thick hair. I used to cry as mum would use the comb for ages! And she went down to the school and let rip because I kept getting re-infested.

From my experience the white hang around for months. I only know from fighting the silly things since dd1 was 4. Pretty sure that's the way it goes from what I've seen.
