Probably sounds like one of the most stupid questions ever but thought i'd put it out there. Does it make any difference which potty you buy and if so which one would you recommend?
Am planning on giving it a shot at toilet training DS at Christmas/New Year when both DH and I will be off on extended leave and should also be outside a lot more so accidents won't matter as much. He turned 2 at the end of September and appears to be showing a growing interest in using the toilet. His vocab is also improving so he will be able to communicate a lot clearer when he needs to go.
He told me the other day that he wanted to go pee pee and pointed to the toilet. I asked him if he wanted to sit on it and he nodded his head yes. Put him up but was too late as he was just finishing peeing in his nappy as i took it off him. A few minutes later (still minus his nappy) he went and got his stool pulled it up to the toilet and climbed up and tried to sit down on the toilet! So am taking it that he is getting closer us being able to start. But as I work four days I think it will be best to wait until we have an extended time period.
In the meantime however am going to get potty so he can go there if he chooses .... so any recommendations on which would you would choose. Will probably also get toilet seat in case that's what he would prefer to do and again clueless as to whether there is any difference between the different makes. Haven't even looked in the shops yet but was on here and thought i'd throw it out
Im actually in the same boat as you!
I brought DD a potty that had a lid on it so can be used as a step as well, she did 2 wees in it (in a row) but i think it was a fluke because we just brought it and id just spent the afternoon explaining to her what its all about. (so it was more of a novelty at that stage itms)
shes been taking a lot of interest in my going to the loo, even gets a good look in every angle but i have taken this as a sign and went and brought her one of those toilet seat things (just a $5 job from bigw) and have taken the step into the toilet, i have shown her what its for and when its not on the toilet she put it on the floor and sits on it) but if i put it on the loo she doesnt want to sit. im not going to push it we'll just keep showing her,
The other reason im thinking of just using the toilet, thats one less step we have to take (cut out the potty itms) Dh wont be super helpful with the potty (he doesnt like the idea of having to clean it out ) so if i can get her straight on the loo then he might be more inclined to do it.
Good luck, im sort of putting it off a tiny bit longer because iknow what an ordeal it can be, im also waiting until her communication gets a little better!!
Rather than a potty, my SIL swears by a stand that has steps on the front and a toilet seat that goes up and down. I think it's called bambini pronto? She said her kids didn't understand the potty because they never saw mum and dad using it. This one is easy to put on the toilet and they can climb up themselves.
My little one uses the potty, easier for us as our toilet is in the laundry at the other end of the house and is hard to get to for a 2 year old. I just have a cheap one from Target I think. He handles it fine. I also have one of the toilet seats with the steps as he gets bigger and can hold on a bit better he will start using that.
My DS only used a potty for a short time but one thing I would look for is one that is sort of wide, basic ones are the best I think! We had a fancy one with the backrest but he found it awkward to get on and off, we have a friend whose little girl couldn't' even get her legs in it, she wasn't huge but it was really tinsy. DS went to a seat on the toilet pretty quickly and even then progressed to just the normal toilet with an Ikea step really quickly. I would consider one of those steps things as well and a cheap basic potty in the interim.
I have an elcheapo from BigW. I couldn't understand paying top dollar for something to catch poo. It's done it's job and is easy to clean.
Despite having access to steps and a seat for the toilet, neither of my kids liked being that high off the ground and were freaked out by the whole thing. They were much more confident with the low potty.
We have both a portable potty and a step up toilet seat.
We originally got the potty when DS1 was about 18months old but it was a pain to set up and our toilet area us not that big so it was bulky for our toilet room. We went and stayed at a family members house and their daughter's had a step up ladder...DS1 (who was about 2.5yo at the time) used it much more successfully so we bought one when we got home. It stores in our toilet room easier and easy to put on the toilet in a hurry (even DS2....who is now 21months old can do it). We are beginning toilet training DS2 now...he keeps taking his pants off and wants to copy DS1....so I have the step up one ready to go on the toilet but the portable potty is coming in handy for out in the lounge room or to take down stairs (DS2 goes over and sits on it every few minutes....unfortunately he hasn't actually wee'd in it yet...only on the floor :shakeshead: - nevermind...I know it'll click eventually...and only a month ago he was even scared to sit on them).
Of the 2 I do find the step up toilet seat the better one...we got ours in Big W for about $30-40...there was a more expensive one with characters on it....but i couldn't justify the added cost for a couple of pictures and I'd rather keep it simple...afterall it is only for weeing and pooing!
