Fructose Intolerance, Lactose Intolerance??? I don't know help

My ds2 has never had normal poo's. Like ever. As a newborn, he had constant diarrhea, he would poo constantly and he had severe nappy rash. We had tests done which found out he had undigested food in his poo. But being a small country doctor they couldn't tell me anything more and so we waited weeks to see a paed who fobbed us off completely and told me breastfed babies don't get allergies or intolerances and because he was putting on weight that it didn't matter. But I have always known something isn't right. As he's grown his poo alternates between constipation and this god awful sweet smelling mushy poos which really smell strongly like mouldy fruit. It is so sweet smelling. His weight over the last year has dropped from being on the 60 percentile to just below the 3rd percentile. We recently saw a paed for a heart murmur he has and they said he is on the small side but he's still on the chart so again it doesn't matter. His poos aren't normal, he's never slept a night in his life. I know its just not right. But I can't get anyone to listen to me. We live 600km from the nearest big city, getting a second opinion is not an easy task. We know that he reacts badly to fruit juice, its the one intolerance which makes me think its a fructose intolerance. But even cutting out fruit and fruit juice we are still having issues with him. If he takes even a sip of his sister's formula bottle (she has one bottle a day) Within about a minute he has done a yucky mushy poo. I can't see any fructose on the ingredient list which makes me wonder about lactose. But he seems to drink milk ok, although he has a problem with yoghurt. I am just so confused about where to start, what to eliminate. He is a horribly fussy eater so I don't want to eliminate too many things at once otherwise he might not be eating anything. But I need to get him sorted. We are going to be starting toilet training soon and the thought of doing that whilst his poos are the way they are... well lets say I would prefer for him to stay in nappies forever.

I'm also feeling a little desperate because in the last couple of months dd's poos have been getting more and more gross and have a distinct very strong sweet smell to them as well. She is heading down the same path as her brother

Fructose intolerance isn't just fruit, it's a type of sugar that's found in lots of different foods. I know someone with this intolerance and they have to be very very careful about what they eat, too much glucose can also bring back symptoms, there needs to be a balance between glucose and fructose. I'd suggest talking to a naturopath or someone like that to see where to start. A second paediatrician would be ideal though, although I understand it must be hard to do.

Good luck, I hope you get some answers soon.

Ashton is both Fructose and Lactose intolerant. You will definitely need to get a breath test done if you can as it will help you know what you are dealing with. We had to go to hospital to have Ashtons done. It was a 3 hr test for each one.

Ashton was the same, never had a solid poo in his life. He would also throw up every time he had yoghurt. He got really sick when he was 2.5yrs and we took him to hospital. They told me he had salmonella poisoning. I saw our regular GP later and he recommended the breath tests. That is how he was officially diagnosed.

He is now 5 and we're slowly introducing foods again. He was totally off anything fructose and lactose related for 2 years. We even made our own cordials using citric acid, water and sugar just so he didn't have fruit based cordial.

He will still have a very upset stomach if he has to much of something. For example a few weeks ago in school the relief teacher wasn't told he can't have to much fruit. We have said he can have one small slither of an apple or orange, as they don't have a high fructose level. Anyway he gorged and was sick that night.

We also have to watch what lollies he has. He can't have the Natural confectionery company at all due to fructose components.

He drinks Liddells long life milk which is lactose free, and they also have a lactose free yoghurt, but he doesn't really like it that much. He also has Sanitarium's So Good Vanilla icecream. Special occasions like birthdays, he has a small slither of cake. That only started this year too though, before that I'd make a lactose free cake.

Oh and Ashton also had never slept a whole night in his life cause he was always up with belly aches. We know that now. Now he is just in the habit of waking up from doing it for so long.

If you have any further questions dont' hesitate to ask and I will try my best to answer them.

I think it's unlikely to be lactose intolerance. If babies have that from birth, they cannot gain weight at all without medical intervention. It's often misdiagnosed when there's actualy a probably with milk proteins. Otherwise children can develop lactose intolerance later on - after the age they would have weaned (school-age-ish I think).
It does sound like he has more than one issue, though. What a pain being so far from medical experts! I think you need an expert peaed/dietician to help identify the problem.
There could well be fructose in the formula too...

Well I have made an appointment with a naturopath for when I am visiting mum after Christmas. She specialises in intolerances so hopefully she can let us know what's going on

My Ds was diagnosed with a fructose intolerance in hospital, He was put on intravenous TPN so he could gain weight for four months and then started on a carbohydrate free formula called RCF. Looking back I feel as if we were misdiagnosed in my opion unless the child can grow out of a intolerance because after a year we started karicare gold which is when his poos became normal and then he was slowly introduced to new food one thing every two weeks and now he is nearly three and eats everything, no poo issues so hopefully you get some hope from my post.
