    Tell me about the snow

Well it looks as though we aren't doing Cape York this year so have decided to go south for a week or 2..

When is the best time to go? June/july school holidays or the September ones?

Looks as though we will base ourselves in Jindabyne.

So when is the best time to go? and can we avoid the big cities to get there

It's actually cheaper to fly to NZ to ski apparantly.....what do you want to know about snow though?
It's cold and it's wet! It's actually warm (the temperature) while it's falling and you can get a pretty decent sunburn from the reflection off it.
And if you suck at skiing like moi, it really hurts when you fall in it - it's not all soft and fluffy like it tries to pretend to be lol.

That's about as many facts as I know from personal experience.

Yes you can avoid the big cities. Where are you coming from? We go every year and have done even when dd was 6mths old and DS was four moths when we went last year.

Avoid school holidays if possible they are busy but bearable.

Have you guys skied before? How many days will you be there? What sort of accomodation are you looking for?

I think I would be able to answer most questions you might have we stay at Jindy too and drive up to Prisher each day

If you are going down in the school holidays the best one would be the June/July holidays but as late as you can because it is very early in the season. The best time to go is probably in August.

You can go down the Newell Highway if you want to go inland.

If you haven't skied before then maybe consider Selwyn slopes. It is small and not very challenging but for beginners it is adequate and far more cost effective than Perisher or Thredbo.

ETA - if you are coming from QLD Falls Creek is not much further than the NSW resorts.

Ok coming from CQ Boyne Island.. . We will be camping, No plans to ski but we want to toboggan, have a snow ball fight and make snow angels lol.. Not sure on how many days but will be 7-9 I imagine..

We need to go on QLD school holidays (22nd June to 9th July) due to DS1 starting high school.. Hence the reason we have canned our cape trip With the dates we had to do the trip the kids would have missed most of term 3.. anyways..

Camping as in tents? You would need to have all the appropraite gear for very cold weather camping, normal tents/sleeping bags etc won't cut it.

There are two caravan/camp grounds in Jindy, maybe look at a caravan where you will have more walmth and protection from the elements.

You can toboggan for no cost at Perisher but there is a entrance fee to the National Park which I think alst year was $28 per day per car.
