Yes we did with DS about that age too. I think it is a good age for them to know by. As soon as they understand what you mean I think it is good.
So, I was playing Doctors with my 4 year old the other day, when she was checking her baby sisters heart with her stethoscope, she said *quick my sister is having a heart attack, there is no bobump bobump*
I asked her if she knew what to do if something serious happened with one of us and she just shrugged her shoulders.
So, I told her if mummy or daddy or anyone she knows gets sick and needs help she should call 000 and tell them her name and our address. (she knows our address and her full name)
I was just wondering, how else have you mums of kids this age etc gone about teaching your lil ones how to get help?

I realised the other day my now 5 year old had no idea what to do, so we went through it, played a game and practised and I think she could have learnt a lot earlier but as we have moved recently she is just getting her head around the new address
That sounds like a great start Nikky. My DD was 3 but both of us (DH and I) were policemen at the time and it's really heartbreaking to see how devastating not knowing what to do can be on a child.
Ours started with games and casual chats when we'd see a fire truck/station or ambulance/station.
Most preschools do visits to the various stations but if they don't many are happy to have a friendly visit. DH recently went to pay our ambulance ins and they took the kids around.
my oldest started last year the only scary thing was I had a fall and was upset and he grabbed ph saying should I ring 000 I had to explain no but if mummy didn't answer you then yes ring 000 .. he also know if he stays ont he line they will find him if he forgets his address kindy drummed that one into them last year
DS is 4 and we've been teaching him over the past few months. He seems to understand, and we have practised a few times about how he would reach the phone - it's up on the wall. I also randomly say to him "Tom, what's your address?' just to make sure he remembers it because he did go through a stage where he kept saying he lived in the North Pole![]()
Yep DD is 4 - we have practised a few times, I have saved the number in my phone with a little icon of an ambulance. I am not sure she would remember but I figured the steps in showing her to the favourites on my phone is about the same as going to phone, keypad and typing it in etc. I have taught her our address but she often forgets - just remember they have caller line info as well so the main part is simply getting them to actually call 000 and then they can trace the call in most cases and talk the little ones through what is going on. Fingers crossed none of our kids ever have to do it. xoxo
Another idea is if they can't reach the phone or can't remember, to tell them to run to a nearby neighbours house.
When i was 10 we had a house fire and my mum told me and my sisters to run to our neighbours house, they called the fire brigade for us as the house was too full of smoke to see where the phone was.
There's a website called triple zero hero which helped dd understand a bit more about 000. She grasped the concept around 4.5 years.
Do 000 get the caller info if the call is from a mobile though? We don't have a landline.
Yeah pretty sure they do hun, they will get the billing address I think. I will check with my sister who works for the fireys (I used to as well and know what happened back then but it was a while ago and might have changed since I was there)
