    Question Paleo diet - anyone?

One of my FB friends posted the other night about the Paleo diet working for her. I had never heard of it, so after she told me a little bit, I did my own googling (as much as I could stand to do on my iphone) and I've got to say that I am really interested in trying it out.

Is there anyone here that is on it? is it working for you? Do you find it hard to stick to?

    Cheers
    Mel

Here is some information on it:

The Paleo diet is simple yet remarkably effective for fat loss and halting or preventing a number of degenerative diseases. To reap the benefits of the most effective nutritional strategy known, one need simply build meals from the following:

Lean proteins (ideally) grass fed meat, free range fowl and wild caught fish
    Seasonal fruits and vegetables
Healthy fats such as nuts, seeds, avocado, olive oil, and coconut oil

So basically, no rice, pasta, sugars, salts etc etc etc

A dietician I know has spoken about this. Apparently it is very hard to follow and meet nutritional recommendations because of the availability of the foods, and the reduced nutrients in the grown foods now from soil depletion. I think if you were to consider it, it would more be because of a reaction to preservatives etc rather than for weight loss or general health, and you would probably need supplements. For weight loss or general health it would be more sustainable to combine a sensible diet of a range of easily sourced healthy foods and exercise.

Mod hat - And no, I'm not sure that link is ok

    Thanks MR

I wouldn't be doing it for weight loss, its more a way of life kind of thing. God knows all my "diets" I have ever tried have never worked!!

We eat a very similar diet to paleo. We're on GAPS which is a variation of the specific carbohydrate diet- so same deal with no grains or sugar. I think GAPS is better than paleo for your health though because we are encouraged to eat fat and I dont think lean meats are good for you. I eat heaps of fat and I have still lost a stack of weight- I think the grains and sugar are the things that make you fat.

Is paleo really no-salt? That doesnt' seem healthy either. We buy super good, natural salts and don't eat any processed stuff.

We eat all free-range, grass fed meat, wild seafood and organic fruit and vegetables. I think our diet is very nutrient dense and we're super healthy. I am in awe of what we are doing for our long term health... not the mention that we're also recovering our son from autism

We've been doing it for 6 months now and I had my first "non-legal" food today- had a glass of milk It's not that had to stick to- it's good food.

There are HEAPS of great food blogs full of recipes and meal plans etc. Elana's Pantry has gorgeous recipes. And I think it's Paleo Plan or something with meal plans.

I recently bought a book on Paleo, as well as Norishing Traditions and another one - Good Fats, Bad Fats I think. I am currently reading up on GAPS, so it may take a while to get onto it.

The main thing that makes these diets difficult is that the food we buy normally doesn't have the nutrients that the same food used to have. So you need to buy organic, which I find expensive. So much healthier though. For me, it's about nutrients per mounthful, rather than calories or whatever. How we digest things and gut health are important parts of it all. I may not do GAPS 100% but that's the closest I've found so far.

btw - on Oz Day, I made the most delicious GAPS friendly, paleo, grain free lemon coconut slice in the TMX. Unbelievably yummy and really easy.

Have you had a look at the Marks Daily Apple site? Lots of stuff there including info and recipes, also Sarah Wilson posts a lot about paleo, no sugar and released a quit sugar ebook as well.

I know this is an old thread now but I just wanted to say I follow a paleoish diet not for the weight loss but because I have an auto immune disease and this is the best way for me to eat. I say paleo -ish because I am not strict paleo and if you do your research there are may variations. The bonus for me was weight loss and I didnt have very much to lose I am talking 5kg but it dripped off me and I never felt better energy wise. Because tou are also eating good saturated fat you dont tend to have the sugar or carb cravings. People really need to start doing their research into eating saturated fat because it is essential not the opposite that we have been led to believe all these years. They keep telling us to eat more grains etc but this is what makes us fat along with sugar. Great place to start is google The fat revolution by Christine Cronau she explains it in very simple ways but also shows reference to studies which prove it. You only have to look at her before and afters to see she is onto a good thing.
Strawberry55 - I would also be interested in the ebook.
Basically if you cut out or dramatically reduce your sugar and grains, replaced it with good fats then your well on your way to better health and natural weight loss.

I've been on a Low Carb, High Fat diet for about 3 weeks and have lost three kilos really easily. its been relatively easy for me to follow (would be easier if my entire family weren't carb addicts!) I enjoy the food i get to eat and can feel the difference in me already. less brain fog lol. if I deviate every now and then and have something high in sugar or carbs, I feel yuck almost straight away and especially the next day, tired and headache. not nice

I read a great blog recently about why people fail on the paleo diet and one reason was the "lean meat" thing. Some people go too low fat based on the theory that wild animals didn't used to have as much fat as today's animals. But they would have had some fat, and it all would have been eaten. So eating skinless, boneless chicken breasts sure isn't paleo! If you cut back the carbs AND fat you'll have no source of energy and it will just be debilitating on your body.

I read somewhere that the 'lean meat' part of the Paleo diet was a mistake. Originally, the author included fatty meat but found it difficult to communicate given everyone was so big on 'low fat'. That 'clean meat' was turned to 'lean meat'.

If you think of stone age people, the fat was highly valued. Some fats taste better than others though, so that may have influenced things.

I have read that years, ago meaning our primal ancestors, didn't kill a lean animal they only killed animals that had plenty of fat. This is my preferred way to eat for weight management but more importantly for how it makes me feel. I don't feel deprived at all how good and yummy is fat

Just bumping this thread up - I decided not to go Paleo because it was a bit too restrictive for me, so I thought I would go Primal instead -which is similar but allows small amounts of dairy if your body tolerates it, wild rice, even chocolate! Plus there is a whole lifestyle element to it, including exercise/fitness routines and stuff, so once I lose all my weight, I'm going to switch to Primal.

I have recently gone gluten free though, just to see if that helps my bloating issue of a night time, so I'm sure that will help when I do switch.
