I've always thought you had to do them at the end of a rental. If it wasn't done when you moved the agent should have pursued it then.

We are moving next week and the RE are saying we must professionally clean the carpets. It was my understanding that we only needed to do that if they were done before we moved in.
Our old property manager has written on our condition report that they were not cleaned before we moved in so why should we have to fork out for it doing now?

It is in a standrad rental contract that they must be professionally cleaned at the end of the tenancy.
You provide the receipt to the RE and that way if they have problems with it, they take it up with the company who did the job for you, rather than you.
But yes, you have to get them done professionally.
Then it shouldve been done before we moved in so we would end up having to clean the carpets for us plus the last 3 tenants that lived here ... Not fairim on hold with the RE now because it doesnt seem right since it wasnt done for us

It doesn't matter if it was done for you or not you still have to do it.
The only thing it does mean is that any large stains or damage done to the carpets before you moved in should have been noted by you on the condition report. This means you don't have to remove/fix such problems as they were there before you moved in. If you didn't fill in the condition report properly or at all, then again, not their problem.
Same thing happened to me the carpets were not cleaned before I moved in yet when I left I had to pay for them to get cleaned.
I was in the same boat as you. They weren't cleaned for me and I pointed this out to the RA and they didn't push the issue
Well she said she hasnt seen the condition report and if thats the case a quick runover with one we hire and do ourselves will be sufficient since it states the carpets are stained and dirty we should be ok its just annoying when this new property manager hasnt even seen the house before so hard to explain things to her

Put it this way, if you don't have them professionally cleaned they will almost certainly withhold the cost of having it done from your bond. May as well get them done and control the amount you pay rather than paying for their default contractor.
Ill make sure we do lime. Personally i dont care if we get none of our bond back (although we will) i just want out of this house and away from mil
