Options to help my poor little man and his nasty teeth :(

I'm needing some help for my older twin who is having so much trouble with his teeth.

Both twins are late teethers but the younger twin seems to be taking it in his stride (just like his big sister) but poor DS1 is just not coping at all, and I'm struggling to find things to relieve the pain.

They are 1 next friday and to date DS1 only has his bottom 2 teeth, which he has had for about 3 weeks now and both popped up together. I have a suspicion that the top two are playing the same game and going to sprout at the same time. So I understand why he is is so much pain...

All my kids wear teething necklaces, I have tried Brauers Teething Relief, Nurofen at night, Panadol (which helps a little) and bonjela (which I have to fight to get onto his gums as he won't open his mouth).

During the day he seems o.k, with a few instances of being grumpy and pulling his ears and hair but at night it is horrendous. I have propped his bed up to help with not having the blood rush to his mouth when laying flat to try and help with the symptoms, but the only thing he is happy with is to be with me.

For his sleep/s during the day he goes down fine and will have a long sleep (just woke up from a 3 1/2 hour sleep today) but at night I will put him in bed and within 30-45 mins he is awake and screaming. I have no choice but to pick him up and take him out of the room as he will wake his brother and 2 screaming babies isn't fun.

Once he is up you would think there was nothing wrong at all and to get him to sleep again it has to be in our bed snuggled up against me, which in theory is nice but it's now been 3 1/2 weeks of this same thing. I generally will move him back into his own bed about 1am and he will then happily stay in bed and sleep until 9.30-10am most days.

They may also be going through another growth spurt at the moment as well as the "good" twin - the one with no teething trouble, will go down at night at about 8.30pm and sleep until 9.30-10am and then back in bed around 11.30am-12pm until about 2.30pm and then if they had the chance would go back down again around 5pm. Although at that time I keep them up to have dinner, baths etc.

Can anyone think of anything else I can do to help with his teething issues as I think this is going to be a long drawn out process.

Oh, and I have had him at the Dr a couple of days ago to check and make sure he didn't have an ear infection and the Dr told me he probably has colic. I seriously doubt my almost 12mth old has colic when he has been an excellent sleeper and sleeping through at 10 weeks. It's only since these bottom teeth came through the problems have started.

Omg, you've written my issues with DD word for word. Obviously I have no advice because we're struggling through here too. Just wanted to give you a big I didn't realise babies could be in this much pain from their teeth, it's awful.

    Time.
DD suffers terribly and has massive swollen gums for ages for each tooth. Nothing helps. It will pass - some kids just need more help with these things (and I think you're right, not colic!). Both of mine have needed me aaaallll night through teething. Nothing else for it, I afraid.
I suppose the upside is that one of your boys is doing ok Hope it doesn't last too long for you.

I might be able to offer a bit of help....now Im all for natural and not ALL medical dont get me wrong but at the end of my tether with a baby in agony and in conjunction with DDs beads, teething rings, cold toothbrush etc we use SM33. You can buy it from the chemist and it really did help DD immensly, much more than bonjela did and its what the Chemist recommended. i could have kissed him after the first few days she wasnt in as much pain. I have continued too use it for all her teeth and we have just cut her 2 year old molars and it hasnt upset her at all
So definately worth a try imo!!!! Good luck, its awful watching stubborn teeth come up and down. FWIW DD didnt cut a tooth till 10mths and cut six at once, its horrible to see

Well my poor little man was at the hospital last night with a temp of 38.9 and the Dr's there have deduced he must have an ear infection but can't tell for certain as his ears are all blocked up with wax. But taking into account the ear pulling and then the exceptionally high temp they have put him on antibiotics to help, poor munchkin.

He had a really unsettled night and then this morning threw up his antibiotics and stomach bile and then had about 100ml's of his bottle and then threw that up as well. His temp was still 38.8 this morning, we gave him some nurofen and after about an hour he went to sleep but woke up screaming about 30mins later but his fever broke and his temp was back down to 36.7. He has been really off all day, he is hungry but can't eat and trying to get medication into him is so hard, plus his only comfort is being held by mummy so I ended up using the baby bjorn sling for a while until my back started to kill me (carring 9kg's around is not comfy).

Having said that he has now been asleep for just over 2hrs which is the most he has slept today, so fingers crossed we get on top of this ear infection and then all we have to do is deal with the teething..... oh and also the unblocking of these clogged up ears as well.

Do you know anyone who could lend you a better sling for the mean time? bjorns aren't much fun with bigger babies.

In other news, I bought some sm33 today

Chemist recommended it to me a loooong time ago. Cant remember but DD would have been been between 12 and 18 months. She didnt cut a tooth for 6 months after she started showing teething 'signs'. We have used tubes and tubes of it, nothing else worked here.

ETA: Guess that didnt really answer the question though, did it!

Well, it depends on your definition of safe
They contain artificial sweetners which are carcinogenic. Also salycilic acid, which is similar to the ingredient in aspirin, which is not considered safe as there is a theoretical risk of reye's syndrome if your child consumes it at the same time as having a viral infection.
    sm33 also contains ethanol.

but, it is marketed for baby's teething, yes.

Not sure about the bonjella, as we've never used it, but have you tried weleda teething powder? I've found that to help a lot on bad days/nights

Excuse my sucky spelling, I'm on my iPhone

think the ingredients are very similar, yes. sodium saccharin, Choline salicylate, and ethanol (you can google all this yourself, too, if you're ever wondering)
