    Contamination? Glutened?

DD has Coeliac Disease and we have been symptom free ever since starting the gluten free diet.

Tonight she starting vomiting as she was going to sleep. It was exactly how it was before her diagnosis. She vomited until she was heaving and heaving but had nothing else to bring up. Her undigested lunch and dinner all came up

The only thing different she has had today has been some "Melindas" crackers and Black Swan hummus. I checked both brands ingredients and then also checked the websites before giving it to her and made sure they were ok.

Does anyone know if either of these might cause a reaction??? Or could it simply be cross contamination from me or DP having bread at lunch time?

I am just so upset that this has happened. I am so carefull and it is awful seeing her so sick.

    Oh hun! That's awful!!

The only thing I could suggest is ringing both manufacturers and asking if there's any gluten in their processing plants - maybe cross-contamination that way? By law, aren't they required to declare such on their packaging? You'd know more about that than I.

    Did you eat with/near her?

I'm so sorry your poppet is sick Hope it passes quickly and she's back to normal.

It could be either. Just one crumb of gluten can cause this. Is there any way you can make the household gluten free?

Ingredients like dextrose, flavouring etc, which may not say they contain gluten, often are made from gluten containing products. Or they are made in the same factory as gluten foods. Can you make more of your own food from scratch? I make my own hummus.

I went back through the last few days and realized she has been complaining about her legs hurting since Friday (even a trip to ER after she refused to walk) aching legs were an issue last time as well

So it must be contamination somewhere I think. I also think i need to be way more vigilant... I can't believe it took her vomiting for me to realize she was getting gluten somehow. I am thinking her toaster... DP cleaned it this week and he is still very resistant to how careful we have to be and used the same cloth to clean our toaster

I have a thermomix so I am going to give that a try to make the hummus.. The amount of additives in there was gross as well

I'm sorry Meercat, poor wee thing :-)

TMX hummus is great.. I make a double batch at a time and freeze it in pots, i find the bigger batch processes smoother, if that makes sense. My kids seem to prefer it that way anyway...

Cross contamination is a big thing. It could be your toaster and unfortunately no amount of cleaning will remove the gluten. I purchased a new toaster when my DS2 had been put on an elimination diet and was also advised by the Dietitian to buy the special bags you can toast the gluten free toast in so it doesn't get cross contaminated. You can purchase these from Gluten Free shops, also online. Absolutely Gluten free in Werribee sell online the toasting bags.

I was given a list by the dietitian of gluten containing additives. It was in an email document. I would be more than happy to share it with you. It was quite an eye opener about the additive numbers and dextrose and all sorts of ingredients I had absolutely no idea contained gluten products. Let me know if you are interested in it and I can PM you it.

I hope she is feeling better soon.

Thanks Heather I would love that info!!

I am getting a new toaster tomorrow... And I will order some toaster bags as well. I am also going to have to keep an eye on DP as he works away usually but will be back working local next week so will be way more involved in her food from day to day

In my frantic search for gluten I also found that the shampoo I have Been using for her has wheat starch in it. Doh. There is huge chance she was getting some of that in her mouth because apparently bath water is the only water to drink!

Heather, can you PM that list to me too.

Meercat, it's so frustrating finding gluten in things like shampoo. I've wasted money on things only to find out it had gluten in it. My most recent one was aspirin, of all things. Dont beat yourself up. It's a difficult adjustment to make.
I've found the TMX brilliant for gluten avoidance. Have you tried making the yummy bread from Quirky Cooking?

We're a Wheat (not gluten) free house and we did this too! We finally cleared up the excema and every so often it would break out again and it wasnt until we relised the shampoo we thought was wonderful and organic had wheat in it that it finally clicked. Felt so bad!

Its scary and amazing to see how many products have or come into contact with wheat and gluten.

I have tried to PM both the documents I have, they are in word format. The BB private message is not letting me attach the documents. Not sure why.
I am happy to email them to you both if you don't mind sharing your email address with me.

Oh that Artisan bread I think? DD loves it so much! She begs for it every morning! And it is pretty easy too.... Thank god!!
