Te dental check up thread has just reminded me - DD has never been to te dentist! Should I have taken her when her teeth first came through? I feel awful that I didn't even think of it
She'll be one in a couple of weeks, should I take her now?
My dentist won't see them until they are 2 or older so check with your dentist as to what they recommend. Mine said that they need to be able to follow instructions.
The dentist i saw today said 2+ is generally when they get checked out as they have most of their teeth (DD2 still didn't have all IYKWIM) and they are more able to follow instructions.
I think 1 would be a little daunting anyway.
Thanks I might call the local dentist and see what they say. She's/we're regularly brushing them so I don't think there'll be any issues, but I suppose it can't hurt to get her used to the place if the dentist wants to have a look.
Apparently we can take pre-school children to the school dentists for free in SA; this is according to the mchn nurse I saw with ds1 at the beginning of april before ds2 was born.
Hmm that's interesting to know, thanks Leckert! Although I don't actually know where the local school dentist is
I ended up calling a dentist I've seen a bit of and they said they like to see them when they're one if they have a few teeth. DD has 7, so I made an appointment to have a quick look. At the very least, we'll make sure we're brushing them properly and she can get used to the place.
I took Dd1 for her first checkup when she was 3, almost 4. She (and i )brush her teeth regularly. She had a cavity. . I had no idea. She has deep fissures so had fissure seals put on to help prevent more. I then took DD2 who was just 3 for a check up too. We now go every 6 months. I think as soon as they can follow basic instructions they can go.
When I went to the dentist, I took my baby brother at about 18mths (he is 18 years younger than I) and he used to come in, and sit up on the chair and open his mouth and the dentist just put the mirror in and had a look - it was good, as he wasn't scared and it just showed him the routine.... I don't think we even paid for that bit, it was just something we did to get him comfortable when I was there anyway.....
... he was a really good toddler though... obviously I was able to sit in the chair and he just waited in the corner of the room for me.... pretty awesome really!!! (that's what happens when you essentially have 5 parents!!! (my sister was 12 and brother was 14 when he was born)..... always someone to keep you entertained!)
