    Strawberry/Hemangioma birthmark

I was wondering if anyone else child had one of these? and if and when did it stop growing and start to shrink and fade?

DD is 2 months old and has a large one on her back https://www.bellybelly.com.au/forums...-2-months-old/ its a combined one of surface and deep hemangioma. If you look at the pics in her album you can see that it has rapidly grown in the last two weeks.

I have a GP app to monitor it tomorrow but as far as I have read unless it will impact on her air way or vision they are pretty much left alone.

I hate saying this out loud but im worried how big it will get and what peoples comments and reactions to it will be plus I don't want her to have a unsightly birthmark for the rest of her life. Very vain i know but I cant help but feel that way.

yep my DD 2.5yrs has/had one.

hers grew to the size of 2 thumb nails next to each other.

her paed told us it would be gone by 1 but its still there. its faded and broken up a lot, id expect it to be gone within the next 18 months going by how long its taken to break up and fade.

im not sure if anyone has told you be it will start going grey when its breaking up.

we have been told to expect a little white scar where the spot was once its fully gone.

DD's is on her thigh so not really a place to be concerned, i have a friend whose daughter got one right in the center of her forehead!

I too was worried about DD's hanging around forever but apparently they all do eventually go, so our paed told us.

both my girls had one (DD1 had two) and they were gone by the time they were about 8-9 mths old. |they do tend to get a bit bigger before they get smaller though unfortunately. But luckily it's in a spot that will be covered by clothes anyway.

My sister had one on her chest. Drs said it would fade by the time she was 2 but it didn't start to until she about 7.

I know how you feel, my eldest had one on his bottom lip. I was always getting questions about it. We were referred to a specialist at the Childrens because it involved his mouth. It was a large red lump at the time and we were advised to leave it, if it hadn't disappeared by the time he was 3 we could go back and have it removed, simply because it was really obvious. I remember how worried I was, especially with the not knowing how big it was going to get.

By the time he was a year old it had definitely stopped growing but was still red. By the time he was 18 months old the redness was starting to fade.

He is now almost 4 years old and while he still has a slight lump, the redness is completely gone, it's the same colour as his lip so it's not noticeable.

Yes DD has one in the crease of her nappy line. She was prescribed a medication called Timolol to shrink and fade the mark. It's actually an eye medication but a side effect is it shrinks and fades birth marks. She's now 8 months old and it's half the size it was originally. Have you seen a pediatrician?
If you are in Melbourne I can recommend one with lots of experience in hemangiomas. Internal medication is also available to treat them.

Hm. I wonder if this is what DD2 has on her hand?
She has a very small red mark, sometimes raised, inside a big blue/purple bruisey looking circle. Has been there since she was born, and sometimes the colour fades, but never permanently.
I have asked every doctor and nurse that has ever seen her what it is, but nobody has been able to tell me.

Some days it is more raised than others, but I suspect it isn't going anywhere.

DD2 also had one on her arm, it was the size of a 20c piece or lightly bigger, it started to disappear around 18 months and is now barely visible!

My DD had a large one up the length of her arm and was referred to a skin specialist through the children's hospital. They had just discovered a blood pressure medicine was having great results in reducing the severity of them. She took the medicine until she was 2 and after being raised, thick and red and something people were horrified to look at as a newborn now at 3 IF people see it then they might think it is a slight rash or a bit of sunburn and it is still fading. So there are things that can be done.

my dd has one right on her hairline. the health nurse said it would grow rapidly in the first 6 months, then 'rest' for about 6-10 months and then start to fade and that we could expect it to be gone/faded by the time she's 5. dd is 14.5months and so far the nurse has been spot on. it's still there but it hasn't got any bigger for months and months and it's no longer as red or raised. I was worried it would be all that people saw but it hasn't been like that. some people are curious and so are kids (a few have been worried she's hurt herself). we've been told that they tend to just watch them and out depends on severity and location on whether they do anything. dd's is only about the size of a pinky fingernail.

GP says its most def normal but has referred us to a pead dermatologist for double check and have her assess whether beta blockers would be the right treatment path.

App with her is 21st June. So two weeks away.

hi, my DD who is 2 month old also have the same problem, and we're in adelaide as well. She has 3 lumps, the one I worries most is on her eyelip. We've got referral to WCH and I also asked for referral to see a dema specialist. My GP just kept telling me "wait and see", which made me disappointed and worried more. I feel very scared if the H on her eyelid may block her vision. We'll see a doctor on thursday. I have no idea what I should do if the doctor sugessts for "wait and see" again.
Have you seen a doctor? What were their response? Is beta blocker one of the applicable treatment for infants?
    Very appreciate for your reply.

    Sorry Fanlaun missed your reply.

We saw the dr and she doesn't want to treat it yet. They prefer not to if its not in a full visible place. We have monthly app to monitor it. It's still growing and at my next app I am going to try and push for something because its just huge.

She did tell me that if a child had multiple of them they do like to do a ultrasound as they can be in their liver too.
