could it be giardia??
DS has been sick for over a week. We have just been managing it at home.
I looked up RCH fact sheet on Gastro, and it says usually you get vomiting for 24-48 hours, then can get poos for up to 10 days.
DS started with yucky poos, what comes out is completely fluid. i know it was last Sat (election day), but may have been a day or two earlier. Then, tues or Wednes he started vomiting. Over night he had both. then he slept from 6 ish - 9 this morning and more poos.
i am just bit confused about what it is, because it doesn't follow the gastro pattern as described. He has had some toast this morning (total 1 piece of bread) and maybe 100ml of rehydration fluid. Toast is the only food that consistently stays down.
He is ok, just wants to be on my lap, and that s it. just trying to work out if i am fine with just monitoring him at home and keeping fluids up, or if i need to get him looked at. He has lost weight, but i don' think he is dehydrated. His poos are still completely wet, but only 1 or 2 a day.
ETA - What foods are good to try? dry bikkies? rice? or do i go mushy vegies or similar?
he puked plain pasta

could it be giardia??
mmm, it could be (based on dr google).
Good Ole Dr Google.. I have known people with it and they have had those exact symptoms. Do you have a family Dr you could ask for tests?? Is he well hydrated it has been a few days now..
I would feed him simple food like steamed apples. Something easy to digest, think early baby foods. Fluid in any form you can. We get a great jelly from our healthfood shop, juices, water, ice... poor little man...
Big hugs, we have gastro in the house at the moment too, the only things we managed to get DS to take in 4 days were water, formula (only at bed) and tiny teddies. I managed to get some bread into him today but now am watching to see how it goes. Everything else he refuses. Now his daddy has the manflu version
I hope you can get your DS to take something soon.
Does sound like the gastro we had a few months ago. Lasted for 11 days for DS. I struggled to keep those fluids in though as he was just pooing constantly so we ended up in hosp with a NGT. I was told later that there's a strain about ATM that remains in the gut longer than usual and is contagious for longer than usual (instead of the standard 48 hrs after last symptoms, apparently it can still be passed on 5-7 days later). Boy, did I feel terrible to learn that... we passed it on to friends of ours and my Mum.![]()
I think once it's been going on that long though, it might be worth getting him checked out on the off chance it is something else. Did the rest of the family get it?
Thankfully, noone else has had it. Have been doing lots of handwashing this week though!
he has had couple of cruskits and kept them down, but not much fluids again. will have to try again.
That would make me more suspicious about the potential for it to be something else, I have to say. I was practically bathing in antiseptic when DS got sick, I was so desperate to not get it as I was 18wks preg at the time too. But regardless, we all got it and anyone who came near us got it too. My Mum was in the house briefly but she barely touched anything and didn't change nappies or anything and she still got sick.
Hopefully it passes very soon. xo
In terms of food the BRAT diet is meant to be good for upset tummy's. Bananas, Rice, Apple Sauce and Toast.
Hope he feels better soon x
If he still has loose stools on Monday I would head for the GP and ask for a stool culture. Hope he feels better soon.
HotI how is he doing?
no vomit since Saturday. still runny poos. have a dr appt for this arvo. I got sample yesterday, and dh is home with him now and has instructions to get sample if he goes again. thanks for asking.
he asked for breakfast this morning so maybe he is starting to feel better.
Let's hope he improves from here![]()
That's sounding positive hoti, here's hoping he's on the mend and feeling his usual self very quickly.
dr was fairly blase, but said I was doing all the right things.
thankfully, I think ds is on the mend. his appetite is back today, in overdrive lol, and his poos starting to firm up. am going to get some probiotics for me, and try to build him up with good food and fresh air. he has had 2 lots of antibioyics this year, and I think they may have increased the sensitivity of his gut.
