    Pancreatitis

Any advice on how to manage it? avoid recurrence?

Looks like this is what has landed mum back in hospital for a second week. First week was kidney infection that went septic and put her in ICU.

Just want to help her as much as possible. I know she has to make dietary changes - but i'm not sure how drastic. Fatty food is a given - but does she also need to cut out acidic food (tomato, onion, cucumber) - she is accepting of losing some of the meat that she likes - said she'd swap to salad - but then we wondered if the acidic stuff in the salads would be a bad thing

    My grandmother had this.

It depends on what type of pancreatitis it is. Some are the result of stones, medication, alcohol etc.

Do you know which one exactly?

not sure if acute renal failure last week triggered it, or it triggered the infection and renal failure

    Re: Pancreatitis

    It can go either way.

My grandmother had renal issues for ages and then ended up with acute hemorrhagic pancreatitis. The only option with that is surgery but she unfortunately got septicemia and things didn't go well. Normally if they get it quick enough it will be all good.

If it's chronic pancreatitis you can lower fat intake, remove alcohol consumption, get pancreas enzyme tablets for digestion and if it's really bad, insulin injections.

Is she hospitalized with it at the moment?

Yes. She has been hospitalized since tues last week (went home mon for a few hours but back in). She is in til at least Monday. There is a thread in platinum. Things were dire with her kidneys last week

Not much has been said about any changes she needs to make as it's only been confirmed today (I have suspected since tuesday). Mum will be going home essentially solo, and has some pretty terrible diet habits so I want to do all I can to help her transition for hospital to home and keep on track to prevent a recurrence.

Do you know if its acute or chronic? My mum required an emergency operation from acute pancreatitis when she was 25. She's never had alcohol since, and avoids all of the typical bloaty foods.

Professor had an acute attack a couple years ago. We're not actually sure what triggered it, it took a while for them to believe that he hardly ever drinks alcohol! He wasn't actually given any suggestions apart from taking it easy on the grog :/ He finds that he gets the symptoms again when he gets majorly stressed out, but drinking water and calming down makes them go away.

Can you ask to see the hospital dietician? They might be able to provide some guidance.

My DH has acute. He now has no alcohol, limits meat to about twice a week, and eats reduced fat everything. He also has anti inflams on hand if he thinks he has overindulged and feeling a bit off.
I have a friend with chronic, and to be honest- his life is hell trying to manage. He has an extreme diet plus supplements just to keep him out of hossy.

I second speaking with the dietician at hospital as well as an exercise physiologist. She really needs a meal plan and stick with it. This may include delivered meals.

    Re: Pancreatitis

We have asked for the hospital dietician to visit, and for me to be there when they do (we have mum at ours for dinner at least once a week so it's important for us to cater to her needs too).

I believe it is an acute situation. She has already told us to remove alcohol from the house. Not that she drinks often or needs it removed (she rarely drinks anyway) but doesn't want the temptation there. Has asked us to go through her freezer as well.

She is on a myriad of supplements and medications as she is an unwell lady as it is, so I want to make sure we so all we can to ease her I to this and keep her on the right path. Unfortunately the hospital are not giving her much information re ok and not ok foods and things. I want to have as much in black and white for her as possible (as some may have re ad in the past, we have mum at our place once a week minimum to make sure she has one decent meal a week. Her earning habits aren't great so we need to be as supportive as possibly to help her out)

I am avoiding dr google until we can speak to the dietician as I don't want to go in to the hospital and say I've read x as the have them say that x is wrong for mum we should be doing y...

    Re: Pancreatitis

She was discharged with a piece of paper printed from the net, and a link to a recipe site. Sigh

Have set her up with food for a couple of days and will fo and make sure she has stuff on Monday night. Tuesday her and dad are doing dinner here. Will make sure she can get through until we can talk to her gp on Thursday...

Are delivered meals an option where you are? Did you get to speak with the dietician and exercise physiologist?

    Re: Pancreatitis

Delivered meals aren't really an option. She is beyond what I would normally term fussy, so trying to organise anything like that would be a waste of everyone's time and effort as she just wouldn't eat

Was told to organise dietician through her gp cos the dietician wouldn't come in on the weekend. The fact I asked for assistance from allied health on the Tuesday after mum was re admitted doesn't seem to have been taken into account...

I made sure she had enough salad foods to get her through til tonight. May have to go shopping after work and drive over to deliver them after I knock off

Gosh- sounds like the hospital was a little unaccomodating!

    Re: Pancreatitis

What sort of follow up shoulda she be getting here? Mum is on a disability pension. Her treating doctor I hospital sent a letter to her gp (which took well over a week to arrive - AFTER the follow up appt we were told to make). Said mum needs a specialised MRI - if gp refers, it's $300+, no Medicare rebate AT ALL. If specialist refers it's bulk billed! She has had blood tests which show her pancreatic enzymes are still whacky, and the gp wants monthly monitoring. Monthly! What the? Shouldn't it be more regular at least for a while? Mum is going back to go again tomorrow to see if she can arrange referral for test via specialist as they simply can't afford $300 for test and she won't end up having it done...
