    DD 14mo waking multiple times

DD is 14mo and sleeps in her cot in our room. Her room is at the other end of our house and opposite her older sisters room and as I've had DD2 sick on and off since approx Feb-Aug we kept her in with us as we were up with her so much and so DD1 wasn't being disturbed as she started school this year.

Anyway long story short, I want to move her to her own room, she is teething though but my concern is that she still wakes during most nights and I either have to give her the dummy, move her position in the cot as she usually ends up with her head up against the rails and I can hear her hitting it, or I just have to put her blankets back on. Sometimes she even cries and when I go to the cot she is actually asleep and I don't have to do anything.

I'm torn on wanting to move her into her room but knowing I'll have to get up and walk down to her room often. Some nights she doesn't wake but more often than not she wakes a couple times.

Suggestions on if I should move her and/or how to help her sleep without me having to go in.

this is me too, ds is nearly 14 mths. he's still in our room, in his cot & wakes sometimes (although lately has been good). all I usually have to do now is lay him down (he is usually sitting or standing when I go in), or position him (he also wriggles up to top of cot & head is squished!). I'm not sure how to get him to resettle himself but I'm hoping he will just get it one day... wishful thinking? ; )

Personally, I wouldn't move my kid if it meant I was going to be getting out of bed in the night. (once or twice is my limit, depending on the time taken to resettle, then they're in bed with me)
When they're developmentally ready to sleep alone they do. All it takes it time.

yes, this is pretty much why I haven't moved him yet. I don't want to have to get up, leave my warm bed, walk to his room, settle, get back to bed & then find he hasn't settled so I have to go back. It's much easier with him in our room atm, sometimes he just needs a 'its time for sleep' and he goes back to sleep.

I would like my bedroom back soon though, mum & dad special time has greatly diminished since ds came along. ; )

Have you tried giving a dummy when you put her down at bed time? She may be more comforted when she wakes if the dummy is already there and go back to sleep. Also try a sleeping bag to avoid her getting cold or getting a leg caught in the cot bars. This could be another reason for wake ups. I bought one for my DD when we took her out of the wrap and they are fantastic. She is always warm and toasty

I would try these things first and then move to her own room. Moving to a new room might be a bit daunting for her coupled with a few new things. I moved my DD when she was 2 months old because I couldn't sleep when she was in our room. But her room is next door to ours so I didn't have far to go luckily.

Yep use both and she has 2 dummies in the cot so she can usually find one if she has lost one.

At this age I would guess that it's her teeth bothering her at night. Sometimes my DD lets out a cry and I go in and she's fast asleep. Has she always woken overnight or has this recently started?

Feels like sleeping through the night is never going to happen, yeah?

I don't think moving her will make much difference to her but to you it sure will! If she's waking then you will be off to the other end of the house with the added stress of getting there before she wakes her sister. It might surprise you, DD sleeps through DS's wake ups here, but their rooms aren't close.

DS is 15 months and still wakes between 2-4 times in a 10 hour period. I learnt from DD that it doesn't matter how hard you try, some of them just wont sleep through until their developmentally capable. Honestly, while it is exhausting I have found the quickest way to get back to bed is to just do what needs to be done to get them back to sleep! In our house unfortunately that's a feed. So yup, 15 month old still feeding 2-4 times a night he refuses any 'comforters'.

Hopefully once those teeth pop through she will be far more settled and you can move her to her own room (if you want) and you get some more rest

I'm in the same boat with our 15mo, we won't be moving him until he's more settled. The thought of getting out of bed & walking down the hall is enough to drive me insane.

It's totally normal for kids to wake in the night and need a parent to go back to sleep into the second year and even beyond (1/3 of four year olds, even). And yes, many still need feeds at this age, too. It's just what humans do, makes sense to do whatever is easiest.

Re: DD 14mo waking multiple times

She has been sleeping through the night since she was 4mo but I think because she has gotten sick so often and is now teething that is what the problem is.
Last night I had her more times than I could count but she wasn't even awake, just letting out a cry or wiggling in cot like she had ants in her pants, or loosing her blankets or loosing dummy so I gave her neurofen at 2:30am and she didn't settle till I got her in bed with me but even then she wasn't totally settled. Rotten teeth is what I'm going to put this down to!
Thanks for everyone's feedback, good to know I'm not the only one.
I never had this with dd1 as she never slept in our room so it's a different experience.

I know this might sound crazy...but it could also be....worms.

This was happening my youngest (the wriggling, the crying out etc). i was putting it down to teeth as well but it seemed as though the pain meds werent doing a thing. then about a week in my eldest came in to our room and told me that her bum was itchy. we wormed everyone the next day and voila! it was something that never crossed my mind but might be worth considering especially now that your eldest is at school (our case conincided with school as well).

But, even still, i would be tempted to not move her. although the frustration in not having any down time can be hard to bear I have found. what a pity that there isnt a closer bedroom!
