Do you always lose your mucus plug before your water breaks?

    Hi all,

I'm just wondering if there is any warning sign that your water is going to break soon - like losing your plug first? It would make sense that it comes out first, or can it all happen at once?

    Hi Kristin
Unfortunately there is no way of knowing when your waters will break. You could lose your plug minutes, hours, days or even weeks before your waters break. You could also lose your plug at the same time as your waters break

Thanks Alan, I feared that may be the case! Ah well I just hope I'm on a tiled floor when/if it happens - and not on our new carpet or couch!

I always feared my waters breaking somewhere inconvenient too! But with both my labours my waters didn't break until the very end, just before bubs arrived and both times it was a very disappointing trickle. How practical of me LOL!

I lost my plug in very early labour both times too.

I had absolutely no warning! I was in bed and thought I was peeing myself. I got up walked to the shower and they just gushed!! I'd had absolutely nothing happen before hand.

I lost my mucous plug on a Tuesday afternoon and freaked out coz I didn't realise what it was. I rang my mum in a panic and she told me that is was the plug. I was surprised coz I have also heard it referred to as the "bloody show" and that's what I expected, blood but there was none.

I had contractions after I lost the plug and for the rest of Tuesday I thought I might have been going into labour. Wednesday came and I had no contractions but then at 2am on Thursday morning my waters broke and 30mins later I was getting contractions and was in labour.

I remember losing my plug the day before I had DD1, with the other 2 I don't remember actually losing it. My waters have always had to be broken manually as well.

My waters didn't break (came out intact) but I did lose the plug (if it's the same thing as all the stringy muscous that came with the show?)

I didn't lose much plug at all! Then ended up being induced anyway.

My waters were broken by the midwife with my first in the heat of labour, so can't remember losing the plug.
My waters broke with my second after labour had started, then stopped for an hour or two then started again!! I can't remember seeing the plug though! I thought I had wet myself actually until my mum said "No honey, that's your waters!" It had never happened by itself before so I felt a little embarrassed!

With all three of mine I've not had a show and had to have my membranes ruptured whilst in active labour.

But I think I may have just had a show tonight!!

LOL my waters broke while i was trying to have an afternoon nap (after almost 12 hours of labour already!). Somehow i managed to be cautious about the possibility and saved our mattress by putting down about ten layers between me and the bed!

I didn't lose my plug until really late in labour - About an hour before Alex was born.

I'm another one who doesn't remember losing it, my waters broke and i was in very active labour straight away (only had a 2 hour labour!) so i have no idea, i have been wondering about it though, guess i'll never know
