Hi, we are starting to develop major tantrums. DD2 is 3 and 1 month and has not had tantrums until the last month. They are so severe now that they last up to 45 mins and she can't get out of them. Just screams and screams and goes crazy. Doesn't really hurt anyone, but may try to lash out once or twice, but relatively gently.
I just don't know what to do. Im trying to be really calm, although that was almost impossible this morning. Tantrum started at 6.30am and I have another daughter sleeping, it just gets too much. Even neighbours walking by looked in.
Im sure she's extra tired. For the last month or 2 she's been taking ALOT longer to get to sleep at night (has gone from sleeping by 7.30pm to sleep by 9pm..even though she is in bed at 7pm). She is definitely tired but I cannot make her sleep. Drugging is tempting, but not an option.
Just wondered if anyone had been through similar and if there's anything I can do about it. Triggers seem to be wanting an object or wanting to do something. it started today because she wanted her cousins to go swimming with her (at 6.30am) they are due to visit at 10am.....
thank youx oxox
Have you tried the naughty chair / corner / stool / area perhaps? By three they can understand that sort of logic after experiencing it a few times (like what the Supernanny does)...
Or maybe it's just a matter of re-structuring her naps??
My DS is going through a "difficult" patch at the min. I think that they can sense change, and know that something is going on. be it that we are both preg, they probably know this, and know that there is going to be change.
we use naughty corner, but doesn't always work. J too is taking loger to get to sleep at night, and seems to wake in a bad mood. That and his appetite seems to have diminished.
i'm always here for a debrief if you need.
We are going throygh this big time too! I fond its more the case that it happens when she is tired though or she hasnt eaten for a while and would have low sugar levels etc.
I am getting REALLY good at ignoring her though and all i say to her when the screaming starts is that i will not be talking to her untill she calms down and talks normally to me and then we will sort out the problem. My 'princess' has staying power though and can srream and kick for up to 45 mins!!
I hope for all of our sake that it is a stage that they go through FAST!
Sorry I cant be of any real help here, just wanted to let you know that you are not alone at all.
Oh and on the sleeping issue - we dont even attempt bed time untill about 9 so that we dont have to battle her and going to bed (picking our battles i suppose) we have quiet time though where the TV goes off at tea time and then its bath time followed by drawing and then 2 books and warm milk followed by teeth and bed! our younger one goes to bed straight after the bath and straght to sleep!
